Caramel Witch Brooms for Halloween

When it comes to food art, two of my very favorite materials are caramels and tootsie rolls. Warmed up slightly, they are super easy to mold into whatever shape you could want. I created these fun candy hot dog cupcake toppers last year for a party and since then I’ve been hooked on this delicious combination. This year, I used flavored tootsie rolls and caramels to create caramel witch brooms for Halloween. This kid-friendly food art is a great craft project on a rainy day.

Caramel Witch BroomsI picked up the rolled wafer cookies in my local Target’s dollar spot and wrapped KRAFT Caramels. I used orange flavored tootsie rolls to add a pop of color but you can choose any variety you like.

Caramel Witch Brooms Ingredients

Ingredients

(makes 10 broomsticks)

  • 10 rolled wafer cookies
  • 10 wrapped caramels
  • 3 to 5 tootsie rolls (depending upon size)

Directions

Unwrap a caramel and heat in microwave for approximately 6 to 10 seconds. You want the caramel to be soft and easy to mold, but not melted. You may need to experiment achieving the perfect temperature in your microwave.

Using your hands, flatten caramel into a rectangle, large enough to wrap around your wafer cookie.

Caramel Witch Brooms Step 1

Trim edges with a knife to straighten. Cut strips down side of caramel with a sharp knife, slightly over halfway through your caramel.

Caramel Witch Brooms Step 2

While still slightly warm, wrap your caramel around your wafer cookie and press in back to seal. (You will need to complete these first steps all at once so your caramel is still warm enough to stick.)

Caramel Witch Brooms Step 3Cut tootsie roll to create broom band around the front. If you use a traditional small chocolate tootsie roll, use half. If trying with a larger flavored midgee, cut into three or four pieces, depending upon how wide you want your band.

Caramel Witch Brooms Step 4

Heat tootsie roll in microwave for a few seconds. Roll into a long worm shape, then flatten slightly. Wrap around caramel, towards the top of the broom, cutting off any excess with scissors.

That is all there is to it! You can offer assorted tootsie roll colors to create a fun rainbow of broom colors.
