Getting my kids to eat their veggies isn’t always easy. Fruit is never a problem but when it comes to certain vegetables, they need a bit of an incentive. That is why I love creative ideas like this one made by Jill Schultz. This fruit and veggie turkey is the perfect way to celebrate Thanksgiving and encourage healthy snacking for your kids. You can always take it a step further and let your kids create their own fruit and veggie turkey using assorted fruits and vegetables. Serve with ranch, veggie dip or hummus.

Ingredients

  • 1 Bosc or Barlett pear cut in half
  • 1 baby carrot nose and feet
  • 1 yellow pepper seeded and cut into slices
  • 1 red pepper seeded and cut into slices
  • 2 Wilton candy eyes
  • white frosting or peanut butter
  • 1 piece of salami ham or pepperoni (tiny gizzard piece)

Instructions

  1. Lay the pear cut side down on a medium size plate.
  2. Add a tiny bit of white frosting to the back of the candy googly eyes using a toothpick to give your turkey some eyes.
  3. Slice your baby carrot and cut a small triangle from one of the pieces to use as his nose.
  4. Apply some frosting or peanut butter to the back to adhere it to the pear.
  5. Use another 2 slices of carrot for his legs.
  6. Finally cut a tiny longer triangle out of the salami/ham/pepperoni for his gizzard.
  7. Arrange his 'feathers' by lining them around the pear.

Feel free to play around with the peppers.  Jill had to put a few edge pieces underneath her turkey and move a few pieces around. There is no wrong way to make your turkey!

  2. I love this idea. I made a turkey with different colored apples and a sandwich for my son’s lunch, but this would make such a cute veggie/fruit tray at Thanksgiving!

  3. This is so darn cute! Many times kids aren’t as eager to eat plain raw fruit – I think they’d make an exception for this – after all, it’s turkey!
