Winters are long here in Minnesota. They even feel longer during the school winter break when you have no plans to go on vacation somewhere (dare I say it), warm. So what do you do when you and your kids are mostly stuck indoors like us this week? You find a way to make it fun and you dream of warmer spring days you swear must be just around the corner. These fun food activities for kids are super simple but pack a cheery punch of spring. Pair this fruit angel food cake food art project with a little chocolate milk rainbow cup DIY and you’ve got yourself a pinterest worthy snack that your kids will be proud of!Fruit Rainbow for KidsI kept things simple with the our chocolate milk cups. I picked up some St. Patrick’s Day foam stickers with several rainbow designs included at a local craft store. Using double-sided tape, we wrapped some red ribbon around our disposable cups and finished off the look with the rainbow foam sticker. I offered to let them create their own rainbows with markers but all three of my boys preferred these. Some rainbow or primary color washi tape would have been even easier than the ribbon, but I was trying to work with what we had on hand.
Making Rainbow Cups

I cut up our fruit pretty small since I knew we wouldn’t have a ton of space to work with on the angel food cake. I ended up having to make the grapes and banana even smaller than shown here. For easier access for my kids, I put them in colorful silicone baking cups.

Chopped Fresh Fruit for Rainbow Food Art

I picked up some angel food cake from our grocery store bakery and chose the loaf version so it would have an even thickness. Pound cake would also work in a pinch if you can’t find this type of angel food cake and don’t want to make it yourself. I rounded off the top edges to resemble the shape of a rainbow.

Making Rainbow Fruit Dessert

My boys loved this fun food art project. Getting the placement exactly right took a bit of time, but the kids had fun working with the fruit and enjoying the occasional nibble.Rainbow Fruit Art Kids SnackTo finish off the look, I used some real whipped cream in a can on each bottom corner of our rainbow for our “clouds”.

  1. Such a great idea! We love using the silicone cups for all kinds of food and recipe ideas too, they are so convenient and easy to clean out. Our favorite indoor activity to do is play card or board games, winters in Michigan are long and cold too except this year we barely had any snow. Thanks for linking up to Inspire Me Monday! Have a great week!!
