How did you decide on your baby’s name?

Choosing the name of our children wasn’t easy. If you asked me 10 years ago if I had three boys would they be named Lucian, Warren and Wesley, I would have said, “Not likely!”. So many factors went into each individual name, including naming trends and our personal tastes. So how did my husband Joe and I pick each name?

Lucian Michael

We loved the name Luke but decided that it was much too common for us so we looked at other names that sounded similar or those we could use Luke as a nick name. We also happened to be watching the series ROME on HBO and a major character was Lucius. My husband came across Lucian (pronounced loo-shun) and loved it immediately but I wasn’t so sure. When our son was born though, it just seemed to fit. Ironically we don’t use the nickname Luc/Luke but instead call him Lou. Michael is my husband’s middle name and I think it is a beautiful middle name.

Warren Joseph

My husband and I both loved the idea of naming a child after a relative. Warren is my father’s middle name and it was the name of his uncle who died in a drowning accident. We liked that it was a strong, classic name that everyone knew but wasn’t overly common. Joseph is my husband’s name and we loved the idea of my husband’s full name being the middle names of both our children.

Wesley James

Coming up with a third boys name wasn’t easy. We tried to make a list of names we liked that again weren’t in the top 50 of popularity and we really struggled. On the short list was Wesley and Miles. Both Joe and I were in love with the shortened form Wes and this was our first baby where we found out the gender ahead of time. We started to call him Wes to see how it sounded and we never stopped. It just seemed right. James happens to be the middle name of Joe’s father and first name of his brother and best friend. We knew whatever name we chose, that would be the middle name. It worked beautifully.
