I’ll freely admit that I’m not an artist. I love to be creative, especially in the kitchen, but art is not my strong suit. I can copy if I have something to reference, but coming up with something that looks like actual art isn’t something I can easily do. But that is ok! Sometimes it is better to tap someone else for a little help. When I decided to join in on Tour the World by Flower from Playground Parkbench and represent my state, I knew it would be fun to create some artwork. So I commissioned Lizzy Barrett (who specializes in drawing flowers) to create a beautiful black and white photo featuring the Minnesota State Flower. This Pink and White Lady’s Slipper Orchid was just what I wanted and so I’m offering it up as a free printable!

Minnesota State Flower Pink and White Lady Slipper Art Free PrintableOriginally this was meant to be a cutting project. I had a grand idea of using multiple scrapbook paper scraps in various shades and prints of green, pink, white and yellow in the background and cutting away the white sections of the print.  In my mind it turned out awesome. But unfortunately executing that idea wasn’t so easy. Because there are so many sections with very thin black lines, especially in the leaves, it was much too easy to rip the printable on card stock.

Minnesota State Flower Watercolor ArtI switched over to using watercolors instead which turned out to be less time consuming and kid-friendly. I found that using a Q-tip was actually easier than a brush.

Pink and White Ladys Slipper WatercolorBecause our state flower is mostly white, it presented a bit of a challenge. I decided to fill the white part of the flower in with white glitter glue. It works great when close up, but doesn’t show up well in pictures. (I would recommend a bit more than I put on if you want it to stand out.) Alternatively, you could use traditional white glitter to really make this flower sparkle!

Orchid Free Printable Watercolor ArtOnce dry you are left with artwork that is perfect for hanging in a 8×10 inch frame.  And while I used watercolor, you could just as easily fill in with marker, colored pencils or even crayons. Not only does this project offer something beautiful to hang in your home, it is also a way to show Minnesota pride or as a teaching lesson of the beautiful Pink and White Lady’s Slipper Orchid.

  2. So pretty. Ohio’s flower is the red carnation, not bad but not as nice as a Lady Slipper.

  3. This is really very pretty! The white glitter glue looks like dewdrops on the petals! I love using watercolors, too. I think I’d like to make a project of all of the state flowers from the states I’ve visited. Thanks for a super idea!
