Thank you to Scholastic for sponsoring today’s post and giveaway. All thoughts are my own.

Getting a pony for your birthday is the dream gift for many little girls. It certainly is for Princess Pincecone in Kate Beaton’s latest children’s book, The Princess and the Pony. And while Princess Pinecone does receive a pony as requested, her new pet wasn’t the warrior pony she had in mind. Inside this book is a great message about friendship and acceptance with some humor that definitely appeals to young children.

About the Book

Princess Pinecone knows exactly what she wants for her birthday this year. A BIG horse. A STRONG horse. A horse fit for a WARRIOR PRINCESS! But when the day arrives, she doesn’t quite get the horse of her dreams…

From the artist behind the comic phenomenon Hark! A Vagrant, The Princess and the Pony is a laugh-out-loud story of brave warriors, big surprises, and falling in love with one unforgettable little pony.

When a hardcover copy of this book arrived on our door, I set it aside in our dining room to read to the boys at bed time. But my older two discovered it while I was working in the kitchen and they ran up to me stating that they loved this new book and wanted to show me their favorite funny parts.

They were more than happy to go along with this idea. It wasn’t long before the giggling started up.

Of course, if you end a book with a farting noise, no matter how tastefully done, my boys are going to think it is the most hilarious book around. They just can’t help themselves. (Potty talk is seriously entertaining.) I personally found the humor still in good taste while still appealing to young children. And the overall message is a good one!
