Although being a busy mom can be a workout of its own some days, it’s often difficult to fit a true workout into the routine. I’ll admit that I’m new to the world of exercise in a traditional sense (apart from the records my mom used to listen to when I was a kid). I hated the idea of formal exercise and always felt defeated doing DVD routines. The thought of going to a gym was too intimidating to consider. My life changed drastically though. This time last year I could barely walk after months of bed rest and ultimately walking a long road of grief. I started the slow journey back to strength with a physical therapist who helped me after being diagnosed with deconditioning.
I joined a local gym and have been determined not to let that setting intimidate me. There are still days that I don’t make it to the gym and I’ve been trying to keep up the routine by supplementing with home DVD programs. Advocare recently released a two-disc DVD set that requires no equipment and each workout only takes 24 minutes to complete! For a busy mom that’s a huge plus.
“The Can You 24 workout series is a new tool to achieve weight-loss goals and experience successful transformations,” Vice President of Marketing Patrick Wright said. “When combined with the AdvoCare 24-Day Challenge, they are the ultimate fitness duo to help you look better, feel better and live better.”
I love that the Can You 24 DVD features seven, 24-minute workouts designed to melt, shred and sculpt. You’ll get a set of two DVDs featuring level 1 and level 2. I like that this provides some variety so I’m less apt to get bored doing the same thing over and over. It’s also a great opportunity to get active with my daughter. She loves exercising with mom and I feel proud to be showing her a positive example (just like my mom did when I was little).
Melt 1 and 2 workouts blend a combination of power, agility, balance and strength to provide an intense cardio workout.
Shred 1 and 2 workouts use cardio conditioning and strength training for a total body workout that will burn calories and build muscle.
Sculpt 1 and 2 workouts are designed to make participants sweat through challenging floor exercises. This sequence focuses on balance and abdominal training to help sculpt and tone muscle.
Core Stretch promotes recovery and supports relaxation through dynamic core and flexibility exercises.
Disc 2 steps thing up to a higher level however you always have the chance to select your workout intensity with each and every exercise through their ColorTrack system which runs along the bottom of the screen. Workouts can be customized from beginner, to intermediate, to advanced (white, blue, red color bars). The system also makes it easy to progress from one level to the next. During some routines I needed to stay on the beginner or intermediate levels while others I could jump up to the advanced which gives a huge boost in confidence. It also motives me to see my ability change. They have a trainer representing each level so you can watch whomever you feel most comfortable following along with.
Each routine starts with warm-up and ends with cool-down. There’s a chart along the left side of the screen that tracks which exercise you’re on. They also provide an exercise description section so you can be sure to have proper form during each step and each level.
As with any DVD program there are some trainers that I prefer over others. They do their best to be motivating and feel personal but there’s only so much you can do through a TV screen.
I did not chose to participate in any of the other AdvoCare products or the challenge but this might be something you’re interested in. They offer the Can You 24 workout DVD and the opportunity to create customized workout calendars.
If you’re new to formal exercise or are starting a new fitness journey of your own I encourage you to see a doctor before making any major changes to your diet or physical activity. I found great benefit in seeing a therapist/trainer to walk me through a gym and ensure I was doing things correctly for my fitness level.
