My daughter just turned five and among her favorite birthday gifts were these Magformers from Constructive Playthings. She hasn’t played with these since her days in the ECFE classroom. They were a huge hit there and the magnetic linking blocks were used for so many creative play ideas. One week the kids would build a garage for matchbox cars. One week they were a cage for dinosaurs and the next a kennel for a stuffed puppy.
Nora loved the bright colors in this rainbow set (it was the theme of the party so she was excited).
This set comes with both square and triangular shapes with a magnet on each side allowing for creative shape construction.
For those with a visual brain like myself they provide a booklet with ideas of the designs you can create with the set you have.
The box also has ideas and Nora first chose this “rainbow rocket ship”. We set to work finding each of the colors.
She was disappointed to realize that the colors on the box were not included in the set. We couldn’t build this design with all blue squares in the bottom like it shows which was hard for her. Once we got past that our rocket ship quickly took shape.
She was able to make this one all on her own and was so proud when she finished. It provided some problem solving opportunities as the squares linked with the triangles in the center.
The globe was a little more tricky. She saw her daddy make it at the birthday party and she asked me to help her put it together. I have to admit both my husband and I enjoy playing with these. My visual brain and his engineering brain are both challenged.
I laid out all of the shapes based on the box directions and slowly lifted the center square watching the globe take shape.
Poof, it was done! This one was so fun to watch take shape as the magnets clicked together.
These Magformers were strong enough to play catch! This toy is listed for ages 6+ however I think younger kids would enjoy them as well. Nora played with them in ECFE when she was 4. Obviously they’re a hit with adults too!

March 26, 2014 at 6:25 amI saw these around Christmas & thought they looked like a lot of fun, but I hadn’t heard anything about them yet so I didn’t buy any. A few years back I had purchased several sets of a similar type toy but they were connected together by little magnetic balls. Those balls ended up all over my house. In fact, I’m 100% certain that if you came today & looked, you would still be able to find some! I like that these seem to be an improved version of that toy. A version with pieces that won’t get lost rolling all over the house!
