Buried Witch Halloween Cookie Balls

It is now day 9 of the 13 Days of Sweet Halloween Treats and that means it is my turn to share a treat! I received a box full of goodies from Wilton and Jo-Ann Fabric to come up with something fun for the holiday. I quickly decided I wanted to make some Halloween Cookie Balls, even though I’d never tried them. This was the perfect time to test them, and they were surprisingly easy! I received this Witch Cupcake Combo Pack with the coolest boot cupcake picks. I knew I had to use them somehow. Why not bury the boots in my cookie ball?

There are several different ways to make cookie balls but the most common seems to be the Oreo cookie ball. It is literally just crushed Oreos mixed with cream cheese and dipped in your favorite chocolate.

Halloween Cookie Balls Crushing Oreos

When crushing the Oreos, I put in a few extra. I set some aside to sprinkle on top of the cookie ball to create the dirt. (Be sure to purchase extra Oreos as the recipe calls for 36 and the package only contains 30.)

After mixing the crushed cookies with a brick of cream cheese, you roll them into equal sized balls. I found using a cookie scoop to be the easiest way. However, because my scoop is a bit larger, I only got 30 balls out of the recipe rather than the usual 48 from a 1 inch ball. Freeze them for at least 10  minutes. Meanwhile, melt your favorite baking chocolate squares, chocolate chips or Wilton Candy Melts. If you don’t already have one and enjoy making candies, I highly recommend getting a Wilton Chocolate Pro Melting Pot. It keeps the chocolate at the perfect temperature for both melting and dipping without burning.  It will give you great results and save you a lot of frustration.

The easiest way to dip the cookie balls is with a toothpick. And since I put a cupcake pick in the top anyway, it worked perfectly. But even without the pick, you can easily cover it up with sprinkles or crushed cookies. Place each ball on a parchment or wax paper lined baking sheet and sprinkle with crushed oreos or sprinkles while still wet. (I found dipping three in a row then sprinkling the crushed cookie on top worked great.)

I am so pleased with how the Buried Witch Cookie Balls turned out. You can bet my kids were begging to try one when they got home from school. They are delicious!
