Copycat Texas Roadhouse Rolls are the best! My husband and I love going to Texas Roadhouse.  He goes for the steak, but it is the rolls with cinnamon butter that draw me. I love them! Nothing beats fresh rolls right out of the oven. It is my little bit of heaven,  even if they are a bit addicting. Jason Meller shares this copycat Texas Roadhouse Rolls recipe with cinnamon butter so you can enjoy this treat at home!

Texas Roadhouse Rolls Ingredients

To make these delicious rolls from scratch, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • active yeast: 1 package or 2 1/4 teaspoons (make sure it is fresh!)
  • warm water: approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit to activate the yeast
  • milk: any variety is fine but 2% or whole milk preferred
  • butter: unsalted
  • flour: all purpose
  • sugar: to add a bit of sweetness
  • salt: to limit yeast growth and bring out flavor
  • egg: to act as a binding agent

And if you will be making the cinnamon butter to pair with them, you’ll need the following:

  • butter: unsalted
  • cinnamon: gives the butter that signature flavor
  • honey: adds a nice sweetness
  • powdered sugar: to make it light and fluffy

You could do this without a stand mixer, but the dough hook makes this job so much easier! If you don’t have a stand mixer, I highly recommend one. I love my Kitchenaid Artisan in Green Apple. The dough hook helps so much with making bread.

How to Make Copycat Texas Roadhouse Rolls

Making these amazing rolls at home isn’t as hard as you might think! Start by heating your milk either on the stove or in the microwave to 180 degrees Fahrenheit to scald the milk. I recommend doing this over the stove so you can keep a close eye on the temperature. Add 2 tablespoons of softened butter and let cool to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Add the yeast to warm water and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let dissolve and get foamy. This will take at least 5 minutes.

In a stand mixer bowl add the yeast mixture, milk mixture, 1/4 cup sugar, salt and 1 cup flour. Combine using your whisk or paddle attachment on your mixture. Add egg and beat until combined. Add 2 additional cups of flour, one at a time, scraping down the sides and mixing after each addition. Switch to the dough hook and add flour, 1/2 cup at a time on low speed until dough forms and pulls away from the sides. Knead the dough with the dough hook on medium until the dough is smooth, 3-4 minutes.

Grease a large bowl with oil or cooking spray. Lightly dust counter with flour and turn dough out. (Be sure to dust your hands as the dough will be sticky.) Form the dough into a ball and place in greased bowl.Turn over once to oil both sides of the dough. Cover and place in a warm place at least 1 hour or until doubled in size. You can also put it in the oven with the inside light left on if you have an older oven.

Texas Roadhouse Dinner Rolls in ovenTurn out on to a well-floured surface. Dust a rolling pin with flour and roll out to ½ inch thick. Using a dough scraper or pizza cutter cut out rectangles of dough about 2×3 inches. Take the rectangles and fold the short edges under, meeting in the middle to make a rounded shape on top. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet. Cover the rolls and let sit until doubled. How long this takes can really vary, depending how warm it is in your kitchen. Allow for anywhere between 15 minutes to an hour or more. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  If you let your rolls rise in the oven, be sure to remove the rolls first! Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until deep golden brown, approximately 11-13 minutes. (May take longer, depending upon your oven.)  Remove and brush with melted butter.

  1. I’ve never been to Texas Roadhouse (vegetarian), so I love the idea of creating this at home! It looks super easy too!

I just made these for Thanksgiving, and about half of them were devoured immediately after I pulled them from the oven. It was my first time ever making bread/rolls from scratch, and people raved about how good they were! I brushed a touch of melted butter on the top right after pulling them out, and it enhanced the delicious flavors even more. And the cinnamon butter was definitely a big hit, too!

  3. Can you clarify something for me? I added 1 C flour initially to the mixture in the bowl. Then switched to dough hook and added 2 more C of flour. My dough is very soft, like it falls out of your hand. The recipe calls for more flour; is the additional amount for the dough or for the countertop when rolling it out? Thxx

    1. The additional is for adding until it stops sticking and really forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Exactly how much that is can vary. Hope that helps!

  4. Just an FYI, the recipe says to dissolve the yeast in warm water. However the recipe calls for milk not water. Just might be confusing to someone who doesn’t bake. It should say warm milk.
And I’m glad I’m not the only one that doesn’t like eating there! My FIL made us go there for mine and my daughters birthday and neither one of us like it! We basically both ate the rolls and my baked sweet potato and that’s it!

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! The recipe calls for both warm milk (heated to 180 degrees and cooled to 120 degrees with butter) and warm water (around 100 degrees) which is mixed with sugar and yeast. Sorry for the confusion, but the yeast is dissolved in the water!

My husband really loves the steak there so we go for that mostly. But I’ve come to learn what I like and don’t like eating there and that really helps to find some favorites on the menu. 🙂

  5. I tried making bread by hand recently and was surprised at how easy it truly is. I used to be afraid to try it at all. This recipe makes me want to go get my Kitchen-Aid out and get to work making these delicious rolls. Thanks for the recipe and for anybody else afraid of making breads – don’t be! Give it an afternoon, think of it as a fun experiment and be pleasantly and deliciously surprised….and proud of yourself! It’s worth the effort!

I just made these for my son that eats 10 of Texas Roadhouse rolls every time we go. He is devouring them right now! The recipe was super easy! Thanks!

I made these today for my parents and 6 year-old daughter and I must say that it was successful. These rolls taste just like Texas Roadhouse rolls. My father and daughter kept going back for more. I’ve tried other roll recipes from other websites and it did not taste anything like Texas Roadhouse rolls. This recipe was spot on! The rolls were so tender and the honey butter taste exactly like the butter they serve in their restaurant. I’m definitely keeping this recipe and I’m going to make these for Thanksgiving.

I made these for the first time tonight. Pretty good. Slightly denser than TR. I probably under-baked them just a bit. I’d give them another try.

  9. I’ve made them twice! I recently took them to a family for part of their dinner and they absolutely loved them!! I’m planning to make them for the third time tomorrow morning.

I’ve been chasing the recipe for these rolls for years!!! THEY ARE PERFECT!!! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe, my six boys thank you!!!!!!

  11. I’m a little lost on the butter with the milk. It says 2T softened and 1 T melted. Do I add both to the milk after it’s scalded? Can you please clarify? Can’t wait to make them! Thanks!

    1. So sorry for the confusion! I’ve updated the recipe to make that more clear. The softened butter gets added to the milk while the melted butter is brushed over the tops when they come out of the oven.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
