It’s so fun to look at the new design trends for spring 2014. They include Pantone color of the year, Radiant Orchid (PMS 18-3224). If you’re a designer like I am you live in the world of the pantone matching system so it’s always fun to see their announcement. Other trends include nautical, floral and geometric. Jo-Ann makes spring crafting easy during National Craft Month with a $5 off $25 or more purchase coupon and a spring crafting inspiration website.

Feeling inspired, I set to work incorporating several of these trends into a task I’ve been putting off for a long time now; organizing my art desk. See if you can spot which trends are used!

So here it is. Oh bother. Last fall I started an online art course called MADE and it inspired me to set up an art table dedicated to all things crafty and creative. We don’t always have the luxury of a space set aside just for this purpose and when we do it’s usually pretty small right? I’ve found I’m not alone with creativity and clutter often coming hand in hand. I set to work trying to maximize my surface with some creative craft storage ideas. I found everything I needed on Joann.com.

What You’ll Need:

  • Mason jars : I dug through my husband’s canning collection and even saved an old jam jar with a handle that I just love. Try to find different sizes and heights. I love the wide-mouth jars because they fit tall items.
  • Containers : Any empty container will do. Get creative. Dig around the house to see what you can find. I  even used empty bullion containers.
  • Mason jar inserts : I fell in love with this daisy design instantly!
  • Washi tape : You’ll find TONS of patterns and colors online. Be sure to check how much you’re getting. I didn’t realize the birds came in a pack of four (good thing it’s my favorite design).
  • Small Knobs : This one is optional. I love these Tim Holtz curio knobs. See how I use them below!
  • Mason jar lids : I didn’t find these online since my husband had a stash with his canning supplies. These aren’t a must-have since most of my jars I left open at the top. Find at a local store or on amazon.com.
  • Scrapbook paper : Again you can pick the color/style you prefer. I used 2014 spring trends for my inspiration.

Unpacking art supplies is like Christmas morning for me. Oooohhhhh aaaaahhhhhhh. Insert happy dance. I set to work pulling out all of my art supplies that would be handy to have on my desktop (which was easy since most of them weren’t put away from that last project). I took some time finding the right container for each of my supplies. This jam jar looked so beautiful with vintage buttons. I used a tall jar without a lid for scissors. My largest jar with a lid worked perfectly to store my washi tape collection. I even found some old bullion containers and finally found a spot for my little stamping alphabets. (Now to figure out how to rid them of the soup smell!)

For the jars that I used a lid insert and the bullion containers I wanted to add a punch of color/pattern with a decorative paper lid and some washi tape (decorative art tape). I traced each of my lids and then cut just inside the line for a perfect fit to each lid. I used a glue stick to adhere the plastic lid papers. The mason jar lids hold the paper in place if you don’t want to use glue. This allows you to swap out the colors/patterns whenever you’d like. I tacked mine down with a tiny touch of glue on the rim so it didn’t fly out when I open them.

I applied several stripes of beautiful washi tape on most of my jars. The clear glass and bold colors/patterns look so fun and brighten up an otherwise boring work space.

TIPS: Start your tape at a natural seem on the jar or container. For the mug I started at the glass seem under the handle. Be sure to place your starting tape on a straight line so as you work around the jar it aligns at the same point. If you get it straight from the start you shouldn’t have a problem. The tape is forgiving so if you go offline, pull it up and start again.

I found it easiest to let the tape roll across the jar as I went around. This kept my tape from bubbling and was easiest to create a straight line.

Because some of the tape designs are partially transparent you can play with overlapping if you’d like.

JoAnn_WashiJars_6I used all four of the skinny tapes on this jar and love how it turned out. My five-year old daughter loved helping me chose which tapes to use on each jar.

JoAnnn_WashiJars_2bWhile shopping for jars on Joann.com I found these beautiful daisy lid inserts. They’re designed for a straw to sit in the center. I bought these cool vintage knobs and screwed them into the center instead! They’re completely decorative since you still have to unscrew the actual lid to open the jars but I think they add a beautiful finishing touch. The added closure on my button jar keeps them safe from spilling. I also discovered that the slots on the top were perfect for storing my watercolor brushes!

JoAnn_WashiJars_7My finished jars are beautified and ready for crafting.

JoAnn_WashiJars_10I kept all of my glue in one spot. Glue glitter, pens and sticks are safely in containers to avoid rolling across the desk.

JoAnn_WashiJars_5bOn a whim I accessorized my old dresser too! This piece is in tough shape and stores my art supplies. I’ve had dreams of totally revamping it in the future. For now a quick stripe of tape with my favorite washi pattern adds such a sweet touch. I just love it.

JoAnn_WashiJars_9Here’s the finished art space. I love that all of my supplies are in organized jars where I can quickly grab what I need when the inspiration hits.

JoAnn_WashiJars_8Nora couldn’t resist the call to craft. She grabbed her glue and got to work.

JoAnn_WashiJars_11Okay, I was a little excited too. It’s been far too long since I had a date with my Prismacolors.

JoAnn_WashiJars_12I’m used to working on the computer every day so it’s nice to use real paper again! (Did you notice my print in the background? It, and many more designs are available on janellewourms.redbubble.com.)

  1. I love this ideal,,,this would be a great rainy day or snow day option for the grandkids to make stuff to hold all their little items that need a home

  2. This looks so neat and love the way everything now has it’s own place. I am going to do this one myself and appreciate you sharing. We have so many things for the kids and all in a drawer or tote. No more!

  3. The mason jars are super adorable! I am setting up a new desk today for my son I wish I had time to make something cute. This looks super fast, maybe tomorrow I can make a few things.

  4. I do not yet own a roll of washi tape BUT…………..it is at the top of my list. And I have a feeling it will be my new obsession. I LOVE these little jars.

  5. I am very impressed by your Creative Craft project! I think it really looks nice and organized and really adds a pop of color and I want to do this to my desk.

  6. I have to admit that washi tape and old jars (mason and others) are a creative person best friend (in any craft including cooking and workshop type spaces.) I also use boxes that I cover with fabric, collage or decoupage to use as file boxes or sideways to store magazine. Used & cleaned up cans can be covered the same way and used to hold pencils, pens, brushes etc.

But even with all those wonderful & creative tools at our disposal – I still have to deal with mountains of odds and ends and paper clutter – and this time I want to do it right. The only way to KEEP it sane and orderly is for EVERYTHING TO HAVE IT’S PLACE so everything and can be in it’s place – or return to it’s place when it’s not in use. Amen to that!

  7. I can so relate to the craft thing and the clutter thing, and trying to organize it to suit our needs. It’s hard to find a ‘home’ for all of the supplies that we have in our home attributed to our art. We’ve allocated an area for our supplies, but we don’t have room for the supplies in the area that we need to work in. We prefer to work in sunlight (upstairs), while we only have room in the basement for our supplies.

  8. i love the little mason jar idea… i need to find some of those- i wonder if they sell them at michaels?

  9. Love the mason jars, you can do so much with them, love doing crafts with my kids, this would be great to make greeting cards with.

  10. I’m no hoarder, but I do have quite a few jars that I have saved over the years. I didn’t know that they made lids like that for mason jars so now I am excited. I find washi tape to be expensive. But for this project it would go a long way! Love it!

  11. This is a very creative set up for organizing crafts in a room. My grandkids have their own room at my house where we store crafts and toys. I will have them do a project this summer very much like this. Thanks for the idea for creative Washi Tape Jars.

  12. I aore mason jars I dont know why. I use them for all kinds of things here at home. I really like this idea too!
