I’ve had my own laptop for years but as my kids have gotten a bit older, they’ve been begging me to use mine. This can get tricky since I use my laptop for work. Their screen time is often when my youngest is sleeping or napping, the perfect opportunity for me to get some work done. I also don’t like them using my laptop for their games since I depend on it.
A few months ago my husband and I were discussing the possibility of getting them one of their own to share and Staples came to the rescue. They offered me the chance to try out one of their laptops, perfect for back to school!
I could get all technical, especially if I had my IT professional husband write the post, but I’ll let you head on over to Staples to get the full lowdown on all the specs. Instead I’ll share with you why we are loving this new Dell Inspiron 15.6 inch Laptop for our family.
For a rather inexpensive laptop, we were both surprised by all the great features!
Size and Resolution
Weighing just under 5 pounds and an inch tall, it quite light and very compact. We like the size of the screen at 15.6 inches and the resolution is 1366×768 which is just fine for what we’re using it for.
My husband was thrilled to see it had two USB 3.0 slots and two USB 2.0 slots. Why does this matter? Besides having plenty of slots to work with, USB 3.0 is known for its super speed and is the latest and greatest. That is up to ten or more times faster than the more common USB 2.0. My husband wasn’t sure a more affordable laptop would have this feature and was excited when he saw it!
Keyboard & Touchpad
We also love the keyboard which includes a number pad and the touchpad, both of which are comfortable to use. This is very important to us as we’ve had problems with certain touchpads not being responsive. The location also doesn’t get in the way when you’re typing.
Both my boys use this laptop but my seven year old uses it the most! He likes it for online games like Roblox and installed software like his new game that is teaching him how to play chess. And I especially like having something that he can use on his own when he asks me one of the many questions that I can’t fully answer. I can tell him to look it up which is much better than my answers, trust me.
I love that he has something he can use for school projects and this will only become even more convenient as he gets older. So far not a single one of the programs or online games that we’ve used have lagged or had any sort of hiccup with this laptop.
We are both very pleased to see how fast the laptop loads. We thought it might not be able to handle much but it hasn’t let us down yet! It comes with the 64 version of Windows 8, which can take a bit to get used to but so far so good.
