I’m often reminded of how dangerous regular daily activity can be. Today alone I can think of the time I caught myself just in time before falling down the stairs and the car that almost rear ended us when pulling out of our drive way because he was speeding down our street. While we can’t prevent every accident from occurring we can make take steps to lesson the chance that an accident will occur. One area we might not ever think of is garage door safety.
The International Door Association (IDA) is a trade association comprised of more than 2,000 door and access system dealers and installers worldwide. To test your garage door safety knowledge, the IDA offers a quick 5 question quiz on its website. With just a few minutes of your time you could learn ways to protect your family from potential hazards.
Before taking the quiz, please consider “D.O.O.R. Safe,” an acronym to help parents teach young children the do’s and don’ts of garage doors.
- Doors are heavy – never stand, run or play under or near any garage door, especially when the door is open or moving.
- Openers are for adults – never play with the button on the wall that opens and closes the garage door.
- Ouch! – never touch any part of a moving garage door. Your fingers and hands can get hurt!
- Remotes are for adults – never play with the remote control in the car or on Mom and Dad’s keychain.
I managed to get all the questions right but some of my answers were educated guesses. I definitely need to talk to my kids more about being safe near our garage door. It honestly was just not something I had thought much about before now.
I’ve got a $25 Visa gift card to give away to one lucky reader who takes a minute out of their day to take the 5 question quiz about garage door safety!
