I’m new to the world of smart phones. Designers are often known for being the first to get new technology but when medical bills pile high we’ve chosen to hold off on luxuries where we’re able. A few months ago my old cell phone finally called it quits after six years of use. I upgraded to an iPhone and I’ll admit that the ability to get online on the fly has had its advantages more than I ever expected.
My husband and I recently went on a much needed vacation to the Charleston, SC area. We had a truly magical time there relaxing on the shore of Folly Beach. We left the wintery weather of a spring in Duluth, MN and soaked in as much sun and fun as we could. Our trip home was far from relaxing however.
Our journey home took three loooong days of airport delays, cancelled flights, missing luggage, security checks and far too many early morning alarms. Detroit was hit by a thunderstorm. Then Duluth was hit by a mega snow storm (yes I said snow storm).

Day three of travel trying to get home in the midst of a snow storm.
(We just woke up from attempting to sleep sitting up for three hours.)
We used our phones countless times to contact family, follow-up on urgent work responsibilities, read books or watch movies. When we finally got into the Minneapolis/Saint Paul airport we hoped to avoid the cost of another hotel so we posted on facebook with an urgent plea for a bed to sleep in and transportation to/from the airport. We were humbled by how many generous friends responded with offers to let us stay and wound up in the home of a childhood friend who was an air traffic controller there. We were so thankful.
With today’s technology we didn’t have to wait in a long line to reschedule a cancelled flight. We were notified on our Delta mobile app and chose our new flight right then and there. We still had our share of marathon runs through the airport to get two of four remaining seats on the next available flight but I’ll take any amount of help in the midst of a long journey home.
Speed important for those who are constantly-on-the-go, especially bloggers, so MSN has been redesigned to deliver the content you care about 4x faster than other top sites. The new MSN experience is available on Windows 8 devices and on iOS and Android mobile devices. #MSNKnowNow

I also love my iphone, another advantage is having a quick way to entertain the kids when you are out and about, or stuck in an airport.

The iphone has really changed the way I communicate with others and I recognize its significance in today’s society. The one downside about the addiction to a smart phone is how often we rely on it that we get lazy! I can’t memorize anyone’s number to save my life. I only know about 5 phone numbers on top of my head. Definitely a bad con if I ever lost it while traveling or just at home because I don’t even have a landline.

what an awful trip home for you! That is one reason I hate flying. Anytime I fly anywhere there are always delays, cancelled flights, and issues.
We recently joined the land of smartphone users ourselves, but we’re still a decade behind – using a palm pixi, and loving being able to get online via wifi instead of just data.
