Whenever I am asked to review anything from HABA USA, I have a really hard time saying no. I love their quality toys and so do my kids! Most recently I was asked to test out some of their play food and a new silicone mold line for kids. I wasn’t going to pass up the chance to add to our collection biofino play food and spend some time in the kitchen with the boys.
As usual, the play food did not disappoint. My personal favorite is the Apple Pie ($12.82) set which features a soft crust, five cut granny smith apples and a double sided lattice top crust.
I love the quality of the fabric and the detail. You can see the craftsmanship in the stitching. The only thing that would make this set even better would be an option to have a slice versus the whole pie.
I also received a Hot Dog and Condiment Set ($6.95). The hot dog surprised me a bit. Not only with the velcro used to keep your dog in place (genius), but for the rather nontraditional toppings included. Technically we received cucumbers and cheese (or even onions) for toppings. That may be more traditional in Europe but not so much here. So instead, we consider this to be pickles and mustard. Works for us!
The condiments are actually plastic bottles with string inside. At first I was disappointed in the plastic but quickly realized they’d have to be to shoot the string out. While the string never actually completely comes out, it didn’t phase my kids. My six year old especially liked these. The string easily went back inside which was a pleasant surprise.
And since my husband and I love sushi so much, this Sushi Play Food Set ($16.14) was an easy choice. Each piece is quite soft and I really liked that the embroidery is on each side of the rolls. The boys seemed fascinated with the chopsticks. Since my toddler is always trying to use them at our Japanese restaurant, he was quick to play with them.
My kids really like all of these sets. They really give them the opportunity for open-ended play. I loved watching my seven year old practice using the chopsticks, while my two year old got creative with the apple pie and hot dog toppings and decided to make a pizza instead. To have fun in the kitchen with the Silicone Popsicle Tray Magica ($17.09) , I decided to make some simple fruit juice popsicles. We received some 100% mango juice as a sample which turned out to be amazing. And see we are huge fans of mango flavored anything (seriously), it was an easy choice. Each package comes with a few fun ideas for the molds and the measurement needed to fill the mold. My boys loved filling them. It was simple but made them feel pretty awesome to be making their own frozen treat. The kids LOVED the taste. I do recommend bending the silicone to pop them out rather than trying to lift the stick. I learned the hard way and pulled the first stick out. Once I gently popped them out instead, it was easy. This was a perfect treat on a warm day. Next time I want to try adding bits of fruit or using greek yogurt. It makes me wonder why I bother buying frozen fruit treats at all when I can make my own. This was really so easy! For the Silicone Ice Cube Tray – Water Party ($9.49), we filled each of the cavities up with fresh lemonade. Once again, this was a great way to get my kids involved and they liked helping. Aren’t these designs fun? They all look adorable and my kids liked picking out which ice characters they would fill and get later on.
This is a great way to avoid watering down your drinks. They were easy to pop out and featuring such fun designs. While I went for a monotone look with mine, you can easily play around with the flavors for more contrast in colors and flavors.
