Homemade Blueberry Sauce | Perfect Topping for Pancakes and Desserts

I love switching things up with our meals and trying out new recipes. Unfortunately my kids are on the picky side, especially my middle son. This makes it tougher to experiment as often as I’d like in the kitchen, especially for dinner. But being part of the Kraft Tastemaker blogging program is a great reminder that I can use items around my house to try something new and think outside the box a bit.

If there is one meal that everyone in this house can agree on, it is that breakfast any time of the day is absolutely delicious!  All my boys absolutely love almost any breakfast food you can think of. From french toast to waffles to ham steak to eggs, they really do love it all!

I happened to have a large carton of fresh blueberries that were starting to get on the softer side. Normally I’d simply throw them into my freezer for later use or  into some batter to enjoy blueberry pancakes. But this time I thought it would be fun to try something new  that could also be used in multiple ways. So I smashed them up, added some sugar and few other ingredients I had on had to create a nice blueberry sauce!

It also makes the recipe a lot more simple. No worries about the consistency!

Blueberry Sauce for Pancakes and More Kraft Up CloseI wanted another flavor to complement the blueberries so I opted for some orange zest because I had that in my fridge. You could easily switch that out with some lemon zest instead.

Or if the citrus flavor doesn’t sound appealing to you, consider adding about a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

While you can serve this warm immediately after you cook it, if you want an hour or more, the flavors really start to settle and come out!  And this sauce can easily be made ahead of time and warmed up. Use any leftovers on other desserts like your favorite JELLO pudding,  ice cream, bread pudding, cobbler or even some greek yogurt!  And don’t forget the COOL WHIP topping to put on top and couple of slices of OSCAR MAYER bacon with those pancakes.
