Whether you are entertaining guests, heading out on a road trip or taking the boat out on the water, there are many reasons to need a deep clean this summer. After having guests over several times in the past couple of weeks,  it became really apparent that my floors and furniture were in desperate need of a good cleaning. With the kids home for summer vacation and spending so much more time outside, they track even more dirt and sand inside our home. I just wasn’t sure how to deep clean carpet, rugs and upholstery without having to call in a professional.

How to Deep Clean Carpet Rugs and Upholstery

The answer is actually pretty simple. By renting equipment and doing it myself, I can get that professional clean at the fraction of the price. I headed out to my local Menards to rent the Rug Doctor. The rental center had everything I needed in their display. Rental cost is $29.99 per day, depending on store. With over 40,000 locations nationwide, it isn’t hard to find a location near you! This deep-cleaning machine can be used on carpet, upholstery, mattresses, or any other soft surface.

Using the system is easier than I expected. Instructions are included directly on the Rug Doctor machine, including the handle.

I tackled my dining room and living room rugs first. You’ll want to start by treating stains with Rug Doctor Spot & Stain Remover or the Pet Stain Remover. (You can use the stain remover spray to clean up spills and stains between cleanings.)

You could easily tell which parts of the rug I had already cleaned. Quite the difference, isn’t it? I liked that it was easy to know when my cleaning solution was out. Once the soap was no longer visible through the top when activating the spray, I knew it was time to refill.

The moment I was sure I was really get a deep clean was when I saw the dirty water left behind. Every time I refilled this was the result. I was so disgusted and had no idea by looking at my rugs just how bad they actually were. (Keep in mind, we take our shoes off at the door.) The rugs weren’t brown, but were actually filthy!

I decided to also spend an extra $5 to get the upholstery attachment. (Be sure when renting that you ask for it specifically since your machine won’t come with it.)

By changing out a couple of connections and altering the makeup of the cleaning solution, including the suggested Anti-Foam solution, I was ready to go!

While we don’t allow food in our living room, we do allow water which had left some horrendous stains on our couch.

After cleaning it twice it looks so much better! And once again, the water was disgusting. It is hard to think about laying on a couch that hasn’t been cleaned for a while. The upholstery attachment would be a great way to get a deep clean in your RV, boat or any vehicle for your next getaway!

  1. I would tackle the living room furniture first. I used to clean upholstery, and the trick to success is having two people one applying and one vacuuming the liquids off. you want contact and the moisture off immediately as you do not want to get it wet, only moist as wear and tear is minimized. think of it as paper, you don’t want it moist ANY longer than needed.

  2. I need to deep clean my carpet in the living room really bad! I have been wanting to do this for ages. Now is the time to do this to have it nice and clean for summer!
