I have often walked through home improvement stores or home decorating stores and looked at the fun chandeliers and lights and thought “that would look good in my daughters room.” Then, I usually look at the price tags and think, nevermind, her boring ceiling light is fine. Mystic Lights sent me one of their Medium Lights to try and I can’t wait to hang it in Danica’s room when we redo it next spring.
The Mystic Lights are self assemble lampshades that you put together yourself (though they do offer the option of having it assembled for you for an additional cost.) The polypropylene interlocking pieces can be assembled in different ways to make a variety of fun lighting options.
You can assemble a kit into 20+ different ways. When you purchase more than one kit your possibilities are endless. You are only limited by your imagination. Mystic Lights are constructed of a lightweight, high-quality polypropylene material which is heat resistant, durable, flexible and easy to clean. You can purchase these in a variety of colors or one solid color. Take a look at our color changing LED light to add even more variety to your Mystic light. We see the lights used in a variety of ways. From being used in your child’s room, as a floor lamp, or being used under the awning of your RV.
You can order each kit with up to 4 different colors. I did just that, picking green, yellow, white and purple. If I were doing it again, I would probably just order 3, it seems like it would have been easier to work with 3. Because of the way the numbers work out with 4 colors I ended up with 8 pieces in two of the colors and 7 in the other two colors. It was hard for me to decide how to order them as I was making my light.
The first day I sat down to put together my light I was not feeling the best and it did not go well. They come with instructions and I started out good with the first 2 rows, but then it got ugly. I decided to put it aside until a day I was feeling a little better. I pulled it out again, looked at the instructions again (more-so at the pictures) then was able to assemble it. It helped when I reminded myself that a long side always matches to a short side for what I was doing. I was simply making the sphere using all 30 pieces. (They also have how to videos on their site).
I think the light turned out great! I may go back and rearrange some of the colors, but overall I think it is adorable. We currently having it hanging in our family room. The lights come with a 12 ft cord with an on and off switch. I put a 13 watt compact fluorescent light bulb (not included) in mine which is equivalent to a 60 watt bulb. It does not produce a lot of light. It would probably be brighter if I put a higher watt bulb in it or if you used all lighter colored pieces such as the white and yellow. The purple shows up a little dark, but I like the effect.
The medium lamp sphere that I made measures approximately 53 inches around in circumference (this is definitely approximate as it was hard to measure with all the dips and bumps, but it gives you an idea of how big). They also offer small and large which come with the same number of pieces but the pieces must be smaller or larger resulting in a smaller or larger lamp.
Someday maybe I will try making the lamp into some of the other fun shapes but for now, I am happy with it and the kids all love it. They all keep asking me if they can have it in their rooms, I haven’t told them yet what my plans are with it.
This would be an awesome gift for a child, teen or tween in your life. It also (as they even suggest on their site) would be great for hanging from an RV awning, or even on your patio for a party or special event. Best part is how affordable they are at $25.00 for small, $35.00 for medium and $45.00 for large. You can even by one kit, buy an extra cord ($10.00) and make several of the smaller lamps using less pieces.
The Medium Mystic Light is $35.00 and can be ordered online at mysticlightsllc.com.
Disclosure: I received a sample for purpose of this review however all thoughts remain my own.
