Danica has been an artist since she was old enough to hold a crayon. I asked her one time recently what her favorite thing to do or play was and she replied “art”. I try to feed her passion every chance I get and promote her creativity. She was elated when I gave her the new Magna Color 3D Art Board from Tech 4 Kids Inc..
With four different colors to choose from, let the drawing begin. Insert a stencil onto the design board or make your own design — then use the Magic Dot Pens to draw colorful works of art. When the masterpiece is complete, get ready for the WOW factor by putting on the 3D UltraVision Glasses. The images seem to pop off the screen! Ready to draw again? Clear dots with the Screen Swiper. Then gently shake and sort different colored dots back into the correct pens. Voila! The initial set comes with 4 Magic Pens and 160 Magic Dots.
I didn’t exactly understand how the Magna Color 3D Art Board worked until we received it. It is a magnetic board with small painted metal dots that are released from the pens when you push down on them. Each dot is a different size, so when pushed off the magnetic board into the back they are sorted by size and therefore color as each color is a different size.
When you put on the 3D glasses, the dots seem to pop right out at you. Danica claimed she couldn’t see it at first (I could see it very easily), but once she figured out how the 3D glasses worked she was extremely amused. It was funny because both she and I did the same thing when we looked with the glasses, we both put our fingers on the board because it looked like the dots were floating and you could put your finger right under them.
My 9 year old nephew and 5 year old niece came over and Danica was SO excited to show them the art board. Both of them loved it just as much as Danica did and it was a big hit with all of the kids crowding to see how it worked.
The Magna Color comes with 4 Underwater world tracing stencils, but additional themed stencils including Midnight Garden, Rainbow Sky and Jungle Adventure are sold separately. Kid favorite licensed themes Hello Kitty and Angry Birds are also available. Danica did not really use/like the stencils, she likes creating on her own more than following a pattern.
The sorter works great, but Danica had a slightly difficult time getting them shaken into the individual pens. Also I have found a few of the dots around on the floor since she played with the board last. The board is recommended for ages 4 and up and Kurt who is almost 4 was able to use it fine, but was not able to get the dots into the pens very easily. I definitely would not want anyone younger than him playing with it as I would worry about the dots being eaten and lost.
Overall I am very impressed with this item, but I do fear the dots will be lost over time. Danica loves it and plays with it often.
A small quantity of product shipped this past summer included malfunctioning pens. As a company dedicated to high quality product, Tech 4 Kids, the manufacturers of Magna Color, would like anyone with malfunctioning pens to contact them at the following email: [email protected] for a set of free replacement pens and dots.
Magna Color 3D Art Board retails for $24.99 and is available at retailers including Toys R Us, Walmart, Kohl’s and many more as well as many online retailers.
Disclosure: I received a sample for the purpose of this review however all thoughts remain 100% my own.
