My husband Kyle and I have an ongoing debate about what is appropriate for our daughters. Danica is 7 now and on several occasions my husband and I have disagreed on things such as clothing, bathing suits, shoes and makeup. I am sure there are more, and some things such as dating she isn’t even close to doing, but we have already had discussions about it. I recently had the chance to review Luna Star Naturals Makeup for girls. While I knew that my husband would disapprove of any makeup, I thought this was the perfect chance to let Danica try play makeup without having to worry about the chemicals that might be in it.
Girls love to play with makeup – it’s part of growing up. But the market is flooded with cheap imports, most of which are a chemical soup of synthetic dyes, petrochemical-based ingredients and other harmful chemicals. Some parents end up buying adult makeup for their children, but most adult products are also full of chemicals not suitable for young people’s delicate skins. Luna Star Naturals seeks to provide a safe, healthy alternative. Only natural minerals are used in their makeup. There’re never any harsh chemicals or synthetic dyes.
We gave Danica the Pop Star All-Natural Mineral Makeup Play Kit (MSRP $19.99) and the Super Star All-Natural Mineral Makeup Play Kit (MSRP $29.99) with strict instructions that they are for play only and not to be worn out of the house. She was THRILLED. She is constantly wanting to wear makeup and has for a long time. I have let her wear lip gloss and nail polish for awhile now (not daily or anything), otherwise she has only worn makeup for dance recitals. On the couple of occasions she did have to wear it for dance recitals it ended up being a huge pain because I let her wear my actual mascara and eyeliner and neither wanted to wash off easily. She didn’t want me getting anywhere near her to help get it off. She ended up going to school the next day still looking like she was wearing it even after a shower. I was embarrassed to say the least to have people think I would send my little girl to school like that.
The Super Star Kit includes:
Luna Stars makeup is so easy to wash off with just a washcloth and water and even when on, most of the colors are pretty light. I will say the electric blue eyeshadow is a little bold. I was worried about the Red Rocks! nail polish in the Super Star kit, but it wasn’t nearly as bold as I was afraid it might be and it peels off easily requiring no chemical removers. The Cheeky blush in the Super Star kit is really too light for Danica as she has a darker complexion, she is happy with it though, so I guess that is all that matters right?
I don’t have extensive knowledge about the dangers of chemicals in makeup, but I know in most adult makeups there are known carcinogens and other products and most are made in China, especially kid’s makeup kits. All of the Luna Star makeup is made either in the USA or Canada. Only natural ingredients that meet the FDA safety standards and CPSIA’s standards for kids’ products are used.
The makeup is recommended for ages 3 and up. I would never give this to a 3 year old without close parental supervision. The eyeshadow and blush are loose powders with a small plastic top with holes in it for the makeup to come through. I can easily see these ending up everywhere if they were to get into the wrong little hands without supervision.
While the prices for these kits are slightly high for play make-up, it is worth every penny to have the piece of mind knowing I am not flooding my daughters skin with chemicals.
For older girls, Luna Star has launched Klee Girls a line of Natural Makeup perfect for tweens ages 8-14.
Klee Girls is an extension to the popular line for older girls who have outgrown the princess fantasy world but want equally beautiful and clean makeup for their dance recitals, wedding processions or fun spa sessions at sleepovers.
The fun, colorful makeup line is made in USA and consists of loose-powder mineral eye shadow (12 shades, MSRP $8.99) in a unique easy-to-use applicator bottle, mineral blush (4 shades, $9.99) and mineral lip gloss with extra moisturizing apple extract and vitamin E (4 shades, $11.99). For the holidays, several “starter” gift kits with a sampling of Klee Girls products are also available.(MSRP $24.99 and $34.99).
While I haven’t tried the Klee Girls I think it is a great idea to have safe products for older girls too. Their faces are subject to enough problems with changing hormones, they don’t need harmful chemicals on top of that.
