One year ago today I was fighting to gain basic strength back. Simple tasks like walking up the stairs after changing the laundry were exhausting and at times terrifying. I’d carry a phone with me in case I couldn’t make it. I was starting the long journey back after spending many weeks on bed rest both at home and in the hospital.
I’ve never been a fan of exercise. Yes, I said it. I was by far one of the least athletic people throughout school. I’ve blamed it on many factors until recently. I started working with a physical therapist after being diagnosed with deconditioning. It was the step that changed my life. He helped me walk through each new exercise and piece of equipment. Today I try to get to the gym on my own at least two days a week. On days that I don’t make it there I do weight training or DVDs at home.
Of course it’s much more fun to break those routines and find a fun way to incorporate a workout into everyday life. Above on the left is a picture of me from a year ago. I walked along a beautiful river walkway near the Mall of America with my girlfriends. We grabbed our cameras and turned our excursion into a photo opp. Above on the right was taken just last week on the beautiful shores of Folly Beach, SC. My husband and I walked along the beach for several miles in search of dolphins. We found five fishing in the mouth of the river as it reached the ocean. WELL worth the workout to get there.
There are days that I feel self-contious in my workout gear. Am I an impostor trying to dress the part? Last year I might have been (although I know many moms who consider black yoga pants the new mom uniform). Today I feel more confident than ever regardless of what other people might think. As we got ready to head for the beach I asked my husband if he thought I looked ok in my snug fitting workout shorts and he responded, “Yeah! You actually look great in that stuff!” Coming from a man who doesn’t give much feedback on what I wear or how I look, I was grateful for his honesty. I hope to keep moving ahead to more progress in that area but more so to be strong and healthy for my family. And yes, I actually enjoy exercise for the first time in my life.

I think the shorts look great, comfy and that’s all that matters if you ask me. Congrats on your progress. I know it’s not easy and I too, dislike working out. Where some say they get more energy, I want to go to bed afterwards. So very proud of you

Good for you! Your story is inspiring. I have been really struggling with my Fibromyalgia. There are days I can barely move, let alone do any exercise. You give me hope. Thanks!
