I’m on a long journey back to “me” after gaining 40 pounds with the triplets I lost in February. Multiple gestation pregnancies encourage a heavy calorie intake in the first months so the babies have a lot of extra calories to consume during the last months. I didn’t make it to those last months. It’s also a huge challenge to go from consuming over 3000 calories a day down to 1200. When Weight Watchers told me about their Smart Ones freezer meals I was interested in trying them.
I realize most people don’t have the same concerns I had with pregnancy weight but I think it’s very common to have those post-baby pounds to shed. Some of us are fortunate to have breast feeding to help lose the weight and of course chasing a toddler helps too. I had both with my daughter and was back to my pre-pregnancy weight in 4 months! I don’t have those benefits after losing my babies. It feels like an uphill battle and I’m grasping at anything that might help.
Browsing the frozen meal isle is never a fun activity for me. Does anyone else fear the cover versus reality game? “Wow that sure looks good!” and then you pull it out of the microwave and it looks nothing like the cover image. I had my fair share of frozen meals when I worked an office job and quickly reverted back to brown bags or eating out. I had a hard time choosing my Smart Ones meals but settled on Traditional Lasagna with Meat Sauce for lunch, Pepperoni Pizza Minis for a snack and English Muffin Sandwhich Turkey Sausage for breakfast.
The prep time for the lasagna and the mini pizzas was quick and easy. I could see this being a benefit working in an office where you have a shorter lunch break.
The lasagna definitely had me looking at “pretty cover regret” as it looked nothing like the box image. That said if I closed my eyes it tasted just fine. Would I buy this one again? Probably not unless I was back in an office job and needed that benefit of fast prep time.
The mini pizzas were much more true to their cover image and were tasty. I had these as an afternoon snack with my three year old daughter. Would I buy these again? Yes! They were quick, easy and tasted good. I would use them as a snack any day or even a lunch. Plus there are 8 mini pizzas (packaged as two servings) in each box so I feel like I’m getting more for my purchase.
I recently had a chance to try the English Muffin Sandwich Turkey Sausage but I wasn’t a fan. I was looking forward to a quick and easy breakfast option with a good source of protein (14g) but they tasted odd to me. I can’t really place the flavor. I think it might have been that it was turkey but maybe it was a seasoning that I didn’t like. I was bummed about this one. I also want to try their yummy looking desserts. They didn’t have any stocked in my grocery store the last time I shopped so I’ll be looking for that next time.
