A few weeks ago we were browsing Disney movies to rent one to share with our preschool aged boys that they haven’t seen before. We spotted Mulan and I realized there was actually a Disney film that I hadn’t seen before either! It came out the year I graduated high school so it should come as no surprise that it wasn’t something I was really interested in at the time.
We all sat together on the couch and enjoyed an evening together with a bowl of popcorn and a new movie to us! While Mulan might not be my absolute all time favorite character, she is one of the most inspiring.
Instead of being a part of the Disney Princesses, Mulan is a young Chinese woman who wonders if she will be able to be her true self. In an attempt to save her ailing father from having to fight in the Chinese Army against the invading Huns, she takes his place in disguise as a man at risk of death if she is found out.
Why do I find her so inspiring? She isn’t a princess. She is in fact a simple maiden who becomes a hero to her country. She is brave and she is fierce in her own way without having any formal training before joining the army. The story doesn’t focus on her trying to find a husband, although she of course hopes to find someone who loves her for who she truly is. Instead, it focuses on her bravery and her desire to protect her family and her country. What could be more inspiring than that?
