When I became a parent, my whole world changed. In an instant I knew what it meant to love someone so much more than yourself. My heart grew more than I ever thought possible.  And I have learned what it meant for my parents to always put their kids first. I grew up in a happy home with two parents who always supported me, spent time with me and showed a lot of love. But it wasn’t without sacrifice. Throughout most of my life, my dad worked two jobs so that my mom could stay home with us. He never complained. He never acted as though it was too much, or he wished things were different. He just did it. And as a parent of three children of my own, I feel like I finally understand him.

He worked extra hard so my sister and I could come home after school to someone waiting for us. So that when we were sick, we always had our mom by our side. So that a homemade sit down dinner with the family every day was normal. He always put family first, because family was so important to him. He didn’t grow up in the same loving environment I did. He made sure we never went without anything, including having a parent who could always be there for us, even if wasn’t him. I can’t thank him enough for his sacrifices.

When I look at my three boys, all I really want for them is to be happy. To grow up knowing that they are loved unconditionally, and no matter what, their parents will always be there. And if that means giving things up for myself, so be it. I gladly put them first.

MetLife’s “My Dad’s Story – Dream For My Child” video is a great example of the sacrifices we make for our children. I dare you to watch this and not get choked up.

This video reminded me of the sacrifices my dad made for me, and how he put his kids first.  How can I not respond to the obvious devotion of this dad and his daughter? That video is full of love.

What kind of sacrifices have you made for your children? Did your parents inspire you?

  1. its a natural instinct parents have to give their children a good life, what type of parents would not want that for their children?
Parents usually give up on dreams or hopes of changing certain things past a certain age and know nothing can be changed but know they can prevent it happening to their children before it does.

  2. I think the biggest sacrifice I have made for my little one so far is losing the precious sleep to make sure he eats well and grows up healthy and strong with my supply.

  3. My parents made a lot of sacrifices for me as a child and as a teen. And i am glad they did cause it showed me how important doing these things ended up having a huge impact on my life, and to do it for my own kids when i had them. Loved the video. Very inspiring.

  4. My dad worked very hard and extra jobs on the weekend. As an adult I appreciate all the sacrifices he made, so my mom could be home for us. I loved coming home and my mom being there. We felt sorry for the neighbors whose mom worked and they would come home to the house was dark, empty and even seemed scary. They had more money to spend, but I would not trade having had more things as a kid instead of having our mom there.
