My daughter has always been on the small side so we tend to celebrate every time she makes the leap to the next size/stage of anything. She’s four years old and is still nowhere near the 40 pound requirement to transition out of her car seat while so many of her friends have long ago. I was surprised to see that she had outgrown the life jacket she used last year (check out her first time fishing below). Whether it’s fishing with my dad, boating with my sister-in-law or swimming in the lake we love the water.
We were at the beach recently with friends and they had some pretty fun life jackets. We live along the shores of Lake Superior and I often feel most comfortable with her in a jacket if we’re actually out in the waves swimming. She’s just starting swimming lessons and is a very independent little girl so it calms the worrying side of my mind to know that she has extra protection in the water.
I also always ensure she’s in a Coast Guard Approved life jacket when we’re boating. I’d love a jacket that she could use for both swimming and boating but there are so many to chose from! I found these styles at SwimOutlet.com.
I’ve seen many kids with these Puddle Jumpers. The reviews say that they’re great for learning to swim as they keep their face out of the water and don’t push them onto their backs like some of the bigger boating jackets do. They encourage swimming. I love all of the bright colors and I know my daughter would love the giraffe. These are coast guard approved but I think I’d prefer a different style for boating
Keep your little one comfortable and safe in the water with the Puddle Jumper® Deluxe Life Jacket.

My friend’s daughter got one of these Swimways Sea Squirts jackets with the shark fin and everyone got a good laugh out of it. I think Nora would like the Nemo version of these. I know I do! Too bad these are beyond her weight limits and the fin wouldn’t be so comfortable in the boat.
Swimways’ popular personal flotation device combines safety and style.
- Parents love the safety features.
- U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD.
- Cool, contemporary design that kids will love to wear.
- Quality neoprene cover, heavy-duty zipper and inner liner.

These Speedo kids life jackets seem more appropriate for boating. I like that they still have the strap between the legs even though it’s for the larger weights.
The Speedo™ Kids’ Personal Floatation Device has plenty of buckle to keep them in place but still comfortable.
- US Coast Guard approved.
- Type III personal flotation device.
- Flotation device has a silhouette for ease of movement.
- Comfortable even with continuous wear.
- Durable Nylon shell. Interior lining: soft Polyester.
- 2 buckles in the front, center, and 1 buckle that connects from behind and under for support.
- Comes in 1 size: support weight is 30-50 lbs. Chest size: 20″ – 25″.
We look forward to a summer filled with fun in the water. We might not have summer for long but in the land of 10,000 lakes we know how to use it well!
