Thank you to Scholastic for sponsoring this post. All thoughts are my own.

I am a pretty lucky parent to be blessed with kids who love to read. Both my husband and I are avid readers and we’ve tried to instill this same love of books to our kids. We started out by reading to them every night and offering a wide selection of books at home. Now that our two oldest can read on their own, we’ve tried to foster this past time by encouraging them to read and providing books they enjoy.  And while they do love to read, that doesn’t mean they don’t sometimes need encouragement. Screen time is always a factor and something we definitely have to limit. That is why I’m happen to partner again this year with the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge!

Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge Power Up and Read

This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” encouraging kids to read all summer long and unlock 12 original short stories by bestselling children’s authors as kids reach reading milestones. Scholastic has joined together with ENERGIZER® to power the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage families to find innovative ways to discover the power and joy of reading. Parents can sign up kids beginning May 4, 2015 and runs through September 4, 2015.

ENERGIZER INSTANT WIN GAME

Energizer® and Scholastic are partnering to create the “Power the Possibilities” campaign which gives moms the tools they need to unlock their child’s talents, fuel their ambitions and set them up for future success. Starting May 4, 2015, parents can buy any specially marked pack of Energizer® brand batteries to scratch for a chance to win one of thousands of prizes that will power discovery and learning.

Prizes include a family trip to New York City, a Scholastic Study Corner Makeover, a tablet with Scholastic apps, a library of Scholastic books and more! Everyone who plays can also download free digital stories for their family.
Scholastic Power Up and Read Summer ReaWe received some great resources and materials as part of our participation in the campaign. These various Scholastic printables included reading certificates, reading log sheets, pledges, booklists, and more to guide our summer reading efforts. You can print these too by signing up for the Summer Reading Challenge!
Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge Materials for SuccessMy goals for my boys this summer are fairly simple. When they aren’t outside playing, I’d like to offer less screen time and more reading! I’d also like to encourage a wider variety of books. You never know when you might find a new genre you love if you never branch out!

Scholastic Summer Challenge Reading Program BooksWe also received five Scholastic book titles to get us started. Rather than pull all our new books out at once, I offered one to each of my boys on a lazy Sunday morning.  Instead asking to watch cartoons, my boys sat and read their new books while I enjoyed my coffee in a quiet house. It was great! They were both really excited by the surprise. I forgot how wonderful a new book can be for a child when given just because.

  8. So many kids to do not read, it’s all about the iPad or game they are playing! I’m a first time mom due in Sept. and my husband and I have already talked about limiting electronics and reading to our baby.

  9. What a great program. I used to do stuff like this growing up at our local library. Great way to get kids to read.

This program sounds really amazing for kids to keep up on their skills during the summer.

  12. My girls are only 2 and 9 months but reading is one of our favorite things to do. I read to them before naps and bed time.
