With summer finally appearing here in cold Minnesota, I’m beyond excited to pack a picnic with my girl and get outdoors for some adventures. This always means having healthy snack options that I can toss in the cooler or backpack and I was excited to try this new treat from Dole.
I planned a play date for the zoo with a picnic in the nearby park. We were having fun in the sun with the kiddos when the sprinkles hit. By the time we were ready for lunch the rain was threatening to hit hard so we ditched the park and made a compromise on my living room floor.
I tossed down the picnic blanket and three hungry kids were ready for lunch! I took out the new snacks first. These Real Fruit Bites come in three flavors, apple, pineapple and mango, and are coated with yogurt and toasted whole grain oats. My daughter loves yogurt so I expected them to be a hit.
The kids gave them a try but unfortunately we didn’t get the response we were expecting with this sweet treat. Nora (3) took a bite and handed it back to me with a whiny “I don’t liiiike it” and Ian (3.5), although giving it much more of an attempt, also turned down the offer to try other flavors. He gave a simple “I don’t like it” and that was that.
I had three more opinions to get after the failed toddler test, after all moms need a quick snack on the go too. (Moms: Read below about your chance to enter for a Dream Destination Getaway!) We all found a few pieces of fruit that were a bit harder than we expected but in general they were easy to eat. In general we liked them but the favorite was pineapple for all of us. Mango came in second and apple last. All of us agreed that somehow the apple bites tasted like artificial banana flavoring which is odd but hard to overcome once we tasted that. The pineapple was sweet but not too sweet and seemed to mix best with the yogurt and oats. When asked, “So would you buy them?” – all of us answered with, “maybe” or “no, especially if the kids won’t eat them.”
UPDATE: I was determined to know if other parents/kids liked these fruit bites so I took them on the road with me on a trip to visit friends. The moms agreed on the comments above (some of the mango bites were literally so hard you couldn’t chew them but overall they were “ok”). I was happy to find that two out of the three new toddler (ages 2-3) testers LOVED the fruit bites and gobbled up the entire package. (Thank you toddler taste testers: Ian, Thomas, Nora, Parker, Coen and Caitlin!)
