If there is one thing this winter has taught me, it is that no matter how cold you think you can get, you can always be colder. Seriously. I live in Minnesota where my city has had a record breaking number of days below zero. Last week we were at 65 days and counting and with this week I believe we’ve hit the 70 mark. That is definitely beats the old record of 59 set in 1959. If you look at average daily temperature, we have to go back all the way to winter of 1874-75 to beat it.
Yes, that cold.
Honeywell shared with me this infographic and it has never been more true in my opinion that this winter. This winter with the polar vortex making most of us in the US absolutely miserable.
I’ve never been so happy that my husband was proactive and switched us over to natural gas this year. Our fuel oil would have been through the roof if he hadn’t. I feel bad for those on propane. I cant even imagine their bills this year. If nothing else, this winter has encouraged us all to be a bit creative to save some money. Honeywell sent me their MyEnergySmart® Infrared Heater to try out. And I have to say, it is awesome.
The Honeywell MYenergySmart™ Infrared Heater provides quick, safe heating for extra large spaces. Six long-lasting quartz elements provide invisible heat, which is evenly distributed throughout the room. The HZ-980’s EnergySmart® Thermostat uses energy wisely, saving you up to 35% on your energy bills.* This electric heater also features an automatic shut-off timer and 2 MyTemp settings, which let you pre-set two favorite temperatures.
I was very excited to add this space heater into our basement playroom. It is a 22’x14′ space and gets very cold in the winter. Since it is such a large space, a smaller heater has to be running for a long period of time before we can even consider being in the room. It used to be tuck under garage and so it wasn’t set up to be heated like the rest of the house. With our this new space heater, it takes no time at all to get our room to a comfortable temperature.
This heater is great for when you want to heat an entire room. The only downside we found was that the temperature seems to be read from the back of the unit. Since the hot air is blowing out, you pretty much have to heat up the entire room before the unit will recognize it. This is great because you know that your room will be toasty warm. But it is also bad because other areas of the room, especially in front of the unit, may be much warmer. To account for this, we set our temperatures lower than what we are trying to achieve. Once you realize this, it is simply to adjust.
I love that MyTemp settings let you pre-set two favorites temperatures. My husband did feel that the controls were a bit complicated at first to set and wished they were a bit more intuitive. Once we got our preferences programmed in however, the control are very easy. The Energy Usage Indicator clearly displays the amount of energy used at a specific time.
One of my favorite features is the cool touch housing and handle. With small children around, I’m so happy that I don’t have worry about anyone getting burned on the unit. Even when the heater has been running a long time, it is safe to touch. (Keep in mind you can touch the unit in front without getting burned, but if the hot air is blowing out, the air itself can get a rather hot. ) It also comes with overheat protection, a grounded 3 prong plug and a remote control.
Our electricity bill is up a bit, a lot like what it is when we run our air conditioners in the summer time. It is hard to determine however how much we are saving on heat with it running. For me, I’m happy with paying a bit additional to have a way to heat this space up quickly and safely.
I have a Honeywell MyEnergySmart® Infrared Heater to give away to one lucky reader!
