With the holiday season always comes a time of reflection for me. Have I done my part throughout the year to help others less fortunate than myself? Am I helping out worthwhile initiatives that help my community?
If there is one way I’ve found it easier to give back the most, it is to my son’s school and the organizations they support. I’m fortunate that my son attends a school that values charitable giving. This holiday season alone they’re supporting three separate drives for toys, books and food. While this is all voluntary, I appreciate that they are trying to encourage this behavior in our children.
But who is helping out the schools?
Did you know that one in four American children do not graduate from high school? I almost don’t believe it myself but that is according to the most recent data by the U.S. Department of Education. That may sound depressing but research shows that if a student can read proficiently by the end of third grade, those odds decrease dramatically. This is why Target is trying to help bridge this gap with the Target School Library Makeover Program.
The Target School Library Makeover program is part of an ongoing commitment to education. Through the program, libraries at more than 30 schools across the country experienced a total makeover this fall. Each remodeled library received 2,000 books, furniture, carpet and shelves, and a complete technology upgrade including new computers, smart boards and iPads. In addition, Target awardeda $15,000 reading grant to all of the schools that have previously received a library makeover. This program is just one example of how education challenges in America are being addressed and more kids are being put on the path to graduation.
Reba Dominski, director of community relations at Target was kind enough to answer some of my questions in this video earlier this fall about their programs.
- I’ve already taken advantage voting for my school to receive gift cards from the Give with Target opportunity on Facebook at the start of the school year. What other ways can I help out my son’s school through Target?
- What is the financial impact of Target’s key educational initiatives?
- Why did Target choose to support education and reading in such a large capacity?
