When you decide to work from home to be able to take care of your kids there are two main important points you will have to deal with. Those are creating a relaxing office space and making your kids understand that they should leave you alone during your working hours. But allow me to explain my suggestions a bit better with some advice points.
- Create the perfect office space. This may sound obvious but you can end up telling yourself that using that old table and whatever chair is available. Take the most of working from home and the possibility of choosing a good desk, a comfortable chair and the details that make you more efficient. You will be saving travel expenses so you can invest at least in this important factor. Moreover, this doesn’t need to be expensive, by using sites like eBay in combination with shipping sites you can find cheap couriers (handy tip you can try using the couriers on uShip, who are always after cheap courier jobs).
- Childcare can help you. Taking care of the house and of your kids is the hardest job. Do not hesitate of thinking about choosing a childcare option. It does not have to be 5 days per week and it can be really helpful for your work efficiency and for most of all your health. If you try to do everything yourself all time you will end up doing everything wrong. As well, by sending your child to a daycare center they will learn important social skills and it will be educational for them, moreover, they will kept them active so when they arrive home they will fall sleep very soon.
- Wake up early. You can get a significant amount done if you wake up an hour before your kids and work or if the idea of waking up early sounds too horrible, work for an hour after they go to bed.
- Call for back-up. It really helps to have a cooperative partner. My wife is a school teacher, so she needs to do a lot of homework herself (pardon the pun), so to make sure we are both able to work and look after the kids we take turns working at the computer while the other looks after the children. Alternatively take the kids out the house, take them to a park, or read to them, while your spouse does some work.
Looking after children and having to work at the same time it is tough, for that it is important have patience with your kids but as well with yourself. Building a stable situation at home will take time but you can achieve it.
