I partnered with Scholastic to share this post!

We are a full month into the school year and my youngest has fully adjusted to his new schedule. He loves being a kindergartner and getting to join his brothers in school. This week was the perfect time to surprise him with a little party when he arrived home to celebrate the release of Groovy Joe: Dance Party Countdown. Come see how I surprised him with an easy White Chocolate Drizzle Popcorn and simple homemade instruments!

I was able to use items I had around the house already to create this fun spread for Wesley.

For the tabletop I used a small roll of black and white wrapping paper to coordinate with a musical note theme. I added a few silver gumballs into shot glasses to mimic disco balls.

For musical instruments I dug into my party supplies for silver cups and mini paper plates. The same mini shot glasses for the gumballs worked to create mini maracas.

I added rice to the mini paper plates and sealed it by stapling the plates together. The silver paper cup maracas were filled with some pasta while the shot glasses have some extra black music note sprinkles to fit the theme. Some black and white mini duct tape worked perfectly to seal the edges around all the instruments.

Wesley was so surprised to come home and find this mini dance party ready for him.

The instruments were fun to play with and he loved his snack of white chocolate drizzled popcorn and cold milk.

Each of the music instruments created very different sounds and Wesley had fun trying to guess what was inside. Making these homemade instruments would be a fun project for kids to make themselves!

Warren was more than happy to join in the fun and read Groovy Joe: Dance Party Countdown to Wesley. Both of them loved the first Groovy Joe book and are big fans of Pete the Cat. (Did you know they have the same author?) Make this easy white chocolate drizzle popcorn recipe with some homemade musical instruments for kids to host your own Groovy Joe party!

Wesley starting counting and singing a long which Warren thought was super fun and cute. Both of the boys said they really liked this new book!

For the white chocolate drizzled popcorn, I used a prepackaged salted popcorn and higher quality white chocolate chips. Since my oldest son plays the piano, I already had these adorable music note sprinkles made by Wilton on hand. You can find them in $1 packages at Michaels. While the sprinkles aren’t too difficult to crunch through, I didn’t add too many to keep the popcorn easier to eat.

I displayed our popcorn in a white bowl with a music note that I cut out of scrapbook paper. A music note cookie cutter made this super easy to trace.

What would your own kids dance party look like? Here are are some great party ideas along with songs and printable song sheets to help you get into the groove. You can also hand out these fun Certificates of Groovy-ness to your guests. And of course, don’t forget to pick up a copy of Groovy Joe: Dance Party Countdown!
