I always enjoy my trips to Wilton immensely as I walk away with new skills and knowledge to be a better baker and better decorator. My most recent trip earlier this month was no exception. Six bloggers, including myself, had the chance to get a hands on experience with a brand new decorating line called Punch. Cut. Decorate! This new decorating technique uses sugar sheets and punches, much like in scrapbooking to easily decorate cakes, cookies and more.
The sugar sheets themselves taste good and remind me a lot of candy corn. They are flexible and can easily be shaped into anything you like and placed on buttercream or fondant covered treats. If you know how to cut paper then you can decorate with sugar sheets, no machine required!
To get perfect shapes and borders, Wilton has developed a line of punches with removable inserts. Much like regular paper punches you can get a professional look with very little decorating knowledge. The shapes were designed to nest together or compliment each other for your design.
The sheets are currently available for $4 each and come in a single package. This is done so you have full choice over the colors you would like for any design. Besides an array of solid colors and alphabet sugar sheets, they also come in prints including zebra, swirls, dots, and more!
The nature of the product however is that they are susceptible to drying out. Each sheet is packaged in a resealable heavy foil packaging to help you keep the product in ideal condition. It is recommended that you reseal or cover any pieces that are not currently in use to keep the sugar sheets from getting brittle. Another downside to the sheets is that the punches do require a little bit of excess on either side to work properly. However, because you can cut shapes without a punch, the scrapes can be used in other ways.
If you love to scrapbook you will love to work with Wilton’s Punch. Cut. Decorate! line of products. Besides layering and folding, sugar sheets can even be used for quilling to create some gorgeous designs with dimension.
I had the chance to make my own cake using sugar sheets and punches. It took about an hour to complete, a majority of which was simply deciding on my own design.
Here are all the cakes we created during this class. Keep in mind we are all average moms and not professional cake decorators! They almost look too good to be edible, don’t they?
Another benefit to the punches is that they are multi-purpose. The following day we used them to decorate a five layered cake using only fondant with the punches.
The results far surpassed anything we had imagined and we were thrilled with the finished product. Working with pre-made fondant (which can be purchased from Wilton) we quickly completed our masterpiece. The only real skill required was a little vision and the ability to roll out the fondant. The punches made it so easy.
Sugar sheets will allow inexperienced decorators to immediately start decorating with absolutely no training and the more experienced decorators the opportunity to do things that simply couldn’t accomplish before because of product limitations. Next time I’d love to incorporate both fondant and sugar sheets into a design to show just how well they can work together and use food writer pens to add my own designs. I am truly excited by the possibilities!
