Mo Willems Pigeon and Duckling Birthday Treats

Ingredients

  • 6 0.4 oz Kellogg's Rice Krispies Treats Original Mini Squares
  • 6 0.78 oz single-serve Rice Krispies Treats Crispy Marshmallow Squares Original
  • 1/2 cup blue Wilton candy melts
  • 1/4 cup yellow Wilton candy melts
  • 4 oz white fondant
  • 1 oz black fondant
  • 6 orange Mike & Ike candies or small jelly beans
  • 6 yellow Mike & Ike candies
  • sky blue gel dye
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 5 paper straws
  • Wilton decorating tips 1A and 12 or other similar sizes
  • water

Instructions

  1. Cut two straws into thirds and three straws in half. Remove cereal treats from packaging. Push longer straws into center of each larger cereal treat and shorter straws into the mini square cereal treats.
  2. Add a drop of sky blue gel dye onto a small amount of white fondant (about the size of a pin pong ball) and gently knead together to fully color light blue. (You may need to warm up your fondant in the microwave a few seconds to make it pliable.) On a clean surface roll out white, black and blue fondant, being careful to not make it too thin.

  3. Make 12 white eyes using the big end of a 1A tip or other small cutter. With the small end of the 1A tip, cut out 6 black eyes for Pigeon. Using the big end of a size 12 tip, cut out 6 blue circles for Duckling. Attach center of the eyes to each white circle using a small dab of water to the back. A food safe brush works great for this but you can also use your finger.

  4. To make the beak, cut each yellow Mike and Ike candies in half lengthwise and gently press cut ends together to seal.
  5. Cut the biggest end off each orange Mike and Ike candy (about 1/4 of the candy) and cut in half lengthwise. Pinch cut ends together to form duck bill.
  6. To make Duckling, melt yellow candy melts in microwave in short intervals, just until melted. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable oil to smooth out candy melts. Using a metal spatula, carefully spread yellow candy melts over the top of each mini square and place one blue eye into center. Place on lined baking sheet to dry a few minutes. Repeat with remaining squares.
  7. Once dry, turn over squares on their side and carefully apply a layer of melted yellow candy to the side. Dip cut end of orange candy duck bills into candy melts and use as glue to attach to the side. Repeat with remaining squares.
  8. Repeat this same process with the blue candy melts, black eyes and yellow beaks to create Pigeon.
  9. Let each cereal treat dry completely on their side before turning over.
