This Mo Willems Pigeon and Duckling Birthday Treats post is in partnership with Disney Book Group, however all thoughts are my own.
Did you know Mo Willems’ Pigeon brand has been around for 16 years? That is a long time that Pigeon has been bringing joy to families with his silly antics. It isn’t had to see why my family fell in love with Pigeon several years back. It has been so fun to read about his love of driving, hot dogs, puppies and cookies and his avoidance of baths and sleep over the years! If there is a children’s book character that deserves a birthday celebration, it is Pigeon!
While we have loved each and every one of the books in the Pigeon books series, my kids have always been drawn to those that feature Duckling. He is such a descriptively sweet and super smart little bird that loves to manipulate Pigeon.
To celebrate Pigeon’s 16th BIRD-day, I thought it would be fun to create Pigeon party treats inspired by their favorite Pigeon book of all, The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?.

I kept this no-bake party treat easier by purchasing my cereal treats, but you can also make them homemade if you prefer. If working with fondant seems intimidating, don’t worry! You really is just like working with edible clay and can be picked up online or at big box retailers or craft stores. For the yellow candy melts I used lemon flavored because I had them on hand and the color better matched Duckling, but regular yellow works too!
How to Make Pigeon and Duckling Cereal Treats
To start, you’ll need to cut your paper straws down. I chose black and white straws to complement the illustration style of Mo Willems, but you can use any colors you like. You’ll need to cut two straws into thirds for Duckling and three straws in half for Pigeon.
Push longer straws into center of each larger cereal treat and shorter straws into the mini cereal treats about half way.
Add a drop of sky blue gel dye onto a small amount of white fondant and gently knead together to fully color light blue. You may need to warm up your fondant in the microwave to make it pliable but be careful to not overheat. Just a few seconds should be enough. On a clean surface roll out white, black and blue fondant, being careful to not make it too thin.
Kitchen Tip: When working with fondant, make sure your hands and surfaces are very clean. The fondant will pick up any nearby hair, crumbs or dust.
Did you know you can use your decorating tips as fondant cutters? They work great and come in so many different sizes. I used Wilton tips 1A and 12 for this project but you can use other similar sizes.
Make 12 white eyes using the big end of a 1A tip or other small cutter. With the small end of the 1A tip, cut out 6 black eyes for Pigeon. Using the big end of a size 12 tip, cut out 6 blue circles for Duckling. Attach the center of the eyes to each white circle using a small dab of water to the back. A food safe brush works great for this but you can also use your finger. Be careful to not use too much water for the black fondant or it might bleed into the white. A small dab is all you need.
To make the beak, cut each yellow Mike and Ike candies in half lengthwise and gently press cut sides together to seal. The cut portion of the candy works great for sealing together, just by pinching the ends. Cut the biggest end off each orange Mike and Ike candy (about 1/4 of the candy) before cutting in half lengthwise. This is so Duckling’s bill is smaller than Pigeon’s beak. Pinch cut ends together to form duck bill.
To make Duckling, melt yellow candy melts in microwave in short intervals, just until melted. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon of vegetable oil (or shortening) to smooth out candy melts. You can skip the oil but it really does create a smoother surface when dry.
Using a metal spatula, carefully spread yellow candy melts over the top of each mini square and place one blue eye into center. Place on lined baking sheet to dry a few minutes. Repeat with remaining squares. Once dry, turn over squares on their side and carefully apply a layer of melted yellow candy to the side. Dip cut end of orange candy duck bills into candy melts and use as glue to attach to the side. Repeat with remaining squares.
Repeat this same process with the blue candy melts, black eyes and yellow beaks to create Pigeon. Let each cereal treat dry completely on their side before turning over.
You’ll want to store in an airtight container at room temperature until ready to serve. That’s all there is to making these adorable Mo Willems Pigeon birthday party treats!
My son loved coming home from school to Pigeon and Duckling treats. All of my kids went nuts for how cute these cereal treats on a stick turned out. They would be super fun to hand out to friends at school or to serve for a pigeon party.
When I asked Wesley how they tasted he licked his lips and told me they were delicious!
