Preparing for a Room Makeover with Glidden Brilliance Collection #gliddentesters

We purchased our house 8 years ago and shortly after doing so we went on a painting spree.  The entire house was painted white, mostly in the hard to keep up flat paint. After years in apartments where we couldn’t paint, my husband and I were starving for color. And so we went room by room and painted. From a green living room to yellow kitchen, we loved choosing them all. When we got to the master bedroom however we decided to go from the usual bright colors to a darker, more sensual one. That is how we decided on a medium purple with a gray undertone.  With black and white accents, it was anything but bright. And it worked well until our kids were born.

I always envisioned our boys sharing a room or utilizing the fact that we have four bedrooms. But with two on the main level near the bathroom and two upstairs with no bathroom, it isn’t hard to see why we’ve wanted to keep to the main level. Up to this point our 3 year old son Warren has gone from a crib to a toddler bed, all the while being almost a “guest” in our master bedroom. Meanwhile his older brother has always had his own room complete with normal blue walls and children’s decor.

It doesn’t seem fair, does it? Instead of our boys sharing a room (which I cringe at the thought at this point) we’ve decided to give up our bedroom on the main level to our son so he can have a space of his own. And with the help of Glidden paint, we’d like to transform our dark and rather dreary purple bedroom into a superhero bedroom for our son.

Here are some before shots.

See what I mean?

Since Warren’s favorite heros include Iron Man and Spiderman AND his absolute favorite color is red, it is impossible to think his room would be anything but red. At the same time, I am scared of that color and really want to brighten the space up. So instead of four red walls I’d like to do one red accent wall and a lighter color on the other three walls.

I researched colors on Glidden.com which was the perfect way to get a feel for what it would look like on the walls. (Highly recommend checking it out for yourself!)

My husband envisions using yellow/gold with red. It does work well with the theme (think Ironman) but I first envisioned a room that might look too much like McDonald’s or ketchup and mustard. It would certainly make the space warm but I feel like it may still feel too dark.

I on the other hand was leaning towards a very light gray. This pearl gray was perfect as it is sure to brighten the room up. It also goes well with the dark gray bedding with Marvel heroes I picked out and is more of a “city” theme.

I went shopping at Walmart and picked out five testers. The Glidden Brilliance Collection is available in most Walmarts nationwide and offers small testers of over 300 shades for only $2.94 each. This is a fabulous way to get a feel for what each color will look like on a wall.  I chose two different yellow/gold colors, two red and my choice for a light gray.

Which do you like? Help us out!

    1. Are you referring to our orange playroom? I love that room too!

I’m SO not against color and really if it were anything but red I would make it all one color or really bright. But honestly red is scary to me. And right I think the purple is too dark so I’m afraid of dark colors.

Did you like one of the golds?

  1. Yes I love the playroom color! I am scared of the golds, I would be afraid they would be too bright for me. I like terra cotta colors or taupe
    (lol)

    1. That was both mine and my son Warren’s pick too. My older son likes red geranium and pearl gray. So far my husband is losing. 🙂

      1. I thought the geranium and grey looked better together. It brings out a little orangey-ness in the geranium, but I think the grey makes the candy apple look a little muddy.

  2. I agree with Ellen, the pearl gray and the candy apple. The red geranium is awfully bright, I think it would be too much on a whole wall. The dusty gold would be a good accent color.

  3. This project is certainly a huge change-o for that room. I’m sure it will turn out awesome. Can’t wait to see you go from Purple to…Spider Man/Iron Man theme.

  4. You know, before this post I’d never heard of that brand of paint – but then in the last 24 hours I’ve seen three commercials for it. Funny how that happens! I’ll take a look, I’m thinking about repainting our bedroom 🙂

  5. Thanks for the post and the coupon – I have some painting I want to do, so this is definitely timely 🙂

  6. i like the pearl grey, it would provide a nice neutral backdrop for the bright and bold children’s decorations and toys that will eventually fill up the space!

  7. I’m with you. I hate white. We are living in a rent house right now until our house is built and I can’t stand it. Ugh. It has wood panels on the walls. Lol. I think that brown walls are the only thing worse than white. I can’t wait to get some color back in my life.
