How important is it to be kind? As a mom it is very important to me that my children show kindness to others. What is better than having an awesome friendly kid? Introducing the newest Wimpy Kid author—Rowley Jefferson! Rowley’s best friend Greg Heffley has been chronicling his middle-school years in thirteen Diary of a Wimpy Kid journals . . . and counting. But it’s finally time for readers to hear directly from Rowley in a journal of his own. In Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Rowley writes about his experiences and agrees to play the role of biographer for Greg along the way. (After all, one day Greg will be rich and famous, and everyone will want to know his life’s story.) But Rowley is a poor choice for the job, and his “biography” of Greg is a hilarious mess.

My two oldest boys (11 and 12) have read the entire Diary of a Wimpy Kid series over the past several years. Given the popularity of this book series, it isn’t surprising. They’ve always loved the drawings mixed in with text and overall humor. My kids were pretty excited to hear about this latest book from Rowley’s point of view, especially my middle son Warren. To be honest, they’ve always felt that Greg could be a bit of a jerk, especially to Rowley. While that does offer teachable moments, they prefer Rowley as a character over Greg and wanted to read a book that focused more on him.

As soon as Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal arrived in the mail, Warren wasted no time. He absolutely loves reading and is always looking for a new book. He really liked it overall and felt that this book confirmed what he already knew – Rowley is a friend he’d like to have in real life. The reason Rowley called his book Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid is because that is what he is.  For example, when Rowley creates his own superhero, he designs one with kindness as his super power because he wanted a role model for children. This is very different from Greg, who laughs at Rowley for his choice. Rowley exhibits the characteristics of an awesome, friendly kid through his positive outlook, enthusiasm, and kindness.

Warren is my own awesome friendly kid. He has several close friends at school because he is kind. Sometimes it is just the little things, like when his friend forgot his lunch so my son split his food with him so he wouldn’t be hungry. Or when I see him reading out loud to his little brother in bed or cuddling with him on the couch just because. Or when he offers to make scrambled eggs for older brother because he knows he loves them. Every day is another opportunity to be kind to strangers, friends, and family.
