Did you know that today is International Women’s Day? Every year on March 8th, this day is celebrated around the world for female equality and empowerment. And there is one group of women who are pushing the boundaries in an amazing test in endurance.

As a woman, have you ever been told that you shouldn’t do something? Felt like you were less than? Told you simply can’t do something? I grew up in a world where things were certainly changing for women, but there were still instances where I felt like less than my male counterparts . I remember being told by a teacher in elementary school that, “Boys will be boys.” His inappropriate behavior had no consequence, he was just being a boy after all. My feelings didn’t matter. Thankfully I was lucky to grow up in a supportive household that never made me feel less than.  My parents never let me think I couldn’t do anything. But imagine living where an entire culture believes women are less than? Where women aren’t given the same rights as men? This still exists today.

The professional all-female sailing crew, Team SCA, has already completely more than half of the Volvo Ocean Race. Some argue that this race is the most demanding sports event on the planet and this is the first time in 12 years that women have participating in this 38,739-nautical mile round-the-world yacht race. They have come from all walks of life and backgrounds to take on one of the world’s most challenging endeavors for nine months.

Not familiar with the race? I wasn’t either, but I’m certainly inspired!

SCA, the Swedish leading global hygiene and forest products company, is supporting the team as part of its campaign for women to participate fully in all aspects of society, including those usually dominated by men. Skippered by renowned British single-handed sailor Sam Davies, Team SCA is about to start Leg Five of the Volvo Ocean Race -from Auckland to Itajai, Brazil – which promises to be the most brutal yet. The crew will face fiercely strong winds, deep waves, freezing temperatures and hazardous icebergs. The Volvo Ocean Race started in Alicante, Spain in October 2014 and will finish at the end of June 2015 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

And Team SCA is not alone. Today they are joining millions over the world who are hosting and participating in events to inspire and celebrate achievements for women.

Amazing Women Everywhere

Team SCA launched Amazing Women Everywhere (AWE), a global storytelling initiative to celebrate women around the world who have a positive impact on others, their communities and their surroundings.  This campaign will run nine months, the same time period as the Volvo Ocean Race. The campaign features a digital photo mosaic that enables anyone to share the story of women who inspire them.

Get Involved & Give Back

Take a photo of the woman who inspires you and upload her story and photo at Team SCA Awesome Mosaic. You can also share a photo via Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag: #AWEmosaic

For each picture uploaded to the mosaic, SCA will make a donation to WWF, an organization that shares SCA’s commitment to creating value for people and nature. Let’s share and celebrate the amazing women in our life!
