Spring is finally here! While we still have a bit of snow on the ground, I know it won’t be long before my husband is cleaning out the garage, storing away our snowblower and doing routine maintenance on the lawnmower to get ready for warmer temperatures. When you own a home, the list is always longer when it comes to springtime chores. Owning a home built in 1934, we have plenty of maintenance. If you are a homeowners, I’m sure you can relate. Be sure you don’t forget your garage door!
Most people don’t give their garage doors a second thought until something breaks. GarageDoorCare.com has a 3–step program to help homeowners keep their garage door running smoothly.

Lubricate your garage door twice a year.
Don’t worry, it is easier than you think. If you are like me, you’ve never thought twice about garage door maintenance or the need for lubrication on a garage door. Over time, all those squeaks or groans can lead to trouble. Not sure how? Visit GarageDoorCare.com to learn more. It only takes a few minutes and inexpensive materials to potentially save costly repairs later on.
Sign up for a free twice-a-year email garage door lubrication reminder.
If you can get in the habit to do this at the same time every year, it is easier to remember. Don’t want to worry about remembering? The International Door Association (IDA), a worldwide trade association of garage door and access professionals – and the sponsor of GarageDoorCare.com – invites consumers to register for twice-a-year emails that will remind them that it’s time to lubricate the garage door. And signing up doesn’t mean a flood of emails or sales calls. Just two simple emails will be sent a year.
Find a trusted, local garage door pro well in advance of a problem.
Following garage maintenance tips will extend the life of most of your garage door parts, but sometimes your garage door will need professional attention. Unfortunately no amount of lubrication can keep a worn out spring from breaking. Did you know that the garage door is the largest and heaviest moving object in a home, and can cause severe injuries or even death if damaged or misused? That is why you should call a professional instead of doing the work yourself.
GarageDoorCare.com offers a “Find a Qualified Professional” page through which homeowners can find experienced, local garage door service and repair businesses that are IDA members committed to operating their businesses by the IDA Code of Business Conduct. They are committed to professionalism and safety so homeowners can avoid unscrupulous firms that sell unneeded parts and overcharge customers.
So as you plan out your spring chores – don’t forget to add your garage door to the list!

My favorite tip is the semi annual garage door lubrication.
The Monthly photo eye test sounds neat
My favorite garage door maintenance tip is to do a monthly reverse mechanism test.
I like the Semi-annual lubrication tip! Apply a small amount of spray lubricant to the door’s hinges, rollers and tracks. That’s something I never think about.
I think the best tip is to call a professional to change springs and annual maintenance.
My favorite is the reversing mechanism test. If someone or something is in the way, I want to be sure the door will not close.
The Monthly force setting test is a good tip 🙂
Monthly reversing mechanism test (if your door is equipped with an automatic opener system). Note: garage door openers manufactured after January 1, 1993, are required by federal law to be equipped with a reversing mechanism and a photo eye or edge sensor as added measures of safety to prevent entrapment. If your system does not have these features, replacement of your automatic operating system is recommended.
The door balance test is great.
