Spring Showers Party with Little One Books

With spring comes the warmer weather which is much appreciated after a long cold winter here in Minnesota. We can finally play outside and enjoy the fresh air without freezing. Unfortunately its seems that we’ve had a lot of rainy days this spring. That doesn’t mean however that we can’t have a little fun indoors celebrating spring and the weather with a Spring Showers Party!

I started out by allowing my boys to use their rain gear indoors. I would have let them use their boots but unfortunately they were muddy! Just letting them use umbrellas indoors seemed like a treat.

We read some spring and rain themed books including Thunder-Boomer. This book had a fun, entertaining story line with lots of fun sound effects. This made it easy for me as the reader to have fun with the telling of the story.

We also listened to the CD, The Green Grass Grew All Around which also fit the party theme well. The boys had fun skipping and chasing each other around in a circle.

To give them a special activity I hid some toy bugs and frogs in a storage bin filled with colored shredded paper. It took only a minute or two for me to put together but gave them a different activity that was fun and had lots of tactile sensations. This would work well with other materials such as packing peanuts.

You can see how our simple party unfolded and their reactions to the story, music and bug hunt with this video.

Other Spring Showers Party Ideas:

Dig for worms. Using crumbled chocolate cake (which could later be used for cake pops) to resemble dirt or brown sugar/crushed graham crackers to resemble sand, hide gummy worm candy within a sand pail or bowl. Let your kids dig for worms and enjoy a worm or two! They will love the textures beneath their fingers!

Make Rainbow Jello Cubes. These cubes would look so colorful on a table and be fun to eat. Of course they work perfectly for the spring shower theme. See the recipe at Taste of Home.

Hunt for Rainbows. Make simple rainbows using construction paper and markers or crayons in various sizes. Cut them out and hide them around the house including behind doors, in the shower, on the ceiling, etc with the level of difficulty depending upon the ages of children. Give them a pair of binoculars, magnifying glass or other props which help them feel like a nature explorer. Reward them with chocolate gold coins found from the end of the rainbow or spring stickers!

These are just a few ideas to make your spring shower party successful. This same idea can be applied year round with different themes and you can find music, books and videos to match from Little One Books!

Little One Books was founded with the hope of helping parents, grandparents, caregivers and friends choose the right book, video or music for the little ones in their life.
