My Nikon Hates My Son

My new Nikon hates my son Lucian. Or his eyes at least. I don’t know if I will ever be able to capture my funny five year old in a low lighting situation any time soon. And this seems to be just a problem for him exclusively with the flash.

Trying to capture an impromptu shot of my three boys:

Not bad, except for Lucian’s closed eyes. Let’s try that again.

Perfect shot, especially of Warren. (What a sweet face!) Too bad Lucian’s eyes are still closed. Lucian does get bonus points for his enthusiast smile though.

Oh just forget it.

And last night I took twelve, yes, TWELVE pictures of Lucian in a row and they all turned out like this.

If I just consider this shot I would say he was doing it on purpose. I’m going to cover my eyes, mom!

Except he wasn’t doing it on purpose. Even when he specifically posed for the shots,  his eyes are still closed. I actually couldn’t stop laughing about it after a certain point because it was getting so ridiculous.

I swear, that flash is out to get this poor boy. Hopefully my Nikon warms up to him soon because I’d really miss his beautiful blue eyes!

  1. My son Jaxson knows the timing on the flash for my camera and phone. I have so many pics w/ his eyes closed! It drives me crazy!

  2. My oldest daughter is the same way, and if her eyes aren’t closed she is looking away (just her eyes). I quickly realized that the flash was too much for her to handle (she has epilepsy) when she had an absence seizure after I took 2-3 pictures in a row. She’s starting to pick up on when seizures are coming and will tell us that the flashes (at things like school concerts, etc) “make her feel funny”. So we no longer use a flash when taking pictures of her. They do have something you can get bounces the flash.. and I can’t think of what its called now (lack of sleep with the new baby) lol. I’d like to get one some day to see if it helps for us.

  3. This reminds me of the show My Name is Earl. Earl was never able to take a picture where his eyes were open, not even on his drivers license, lol. My son is 12 and is one of those kids who always makes a funny face right when the camera snaps.

  4. That tends to happen to me actually. I’m usually caught mid-blink. My wedding photographer prompted me WHEN to blink just before he took the pic and it helped a TON. So now I do that in low-light. If someone counts it out I blink just before they click and my body usually can’t re-blink fast enough to avoid the flash! haha. Give it a try.

  5. Awww, still adorable pics. Sometimes I use the camera setting that takes rapid photos in a series with just one click, the one you would use for action. This way I can usually get a photo of my daughter with her eyes open. 🙂

  6. Awwww…the boys are all adorable! I have also heard of a deflector for the flash. I also had problems with one person I was photgraphing who always blinks so was considering buying one of these too. I don’t think they are very expensive. Have to look back at your posts to see what camera you got. I got a new Nikon in the fall and still trying to figure it all out!

  7. LOL…the pictures are still adorable. I had this same problem when I’m taking pictures, so I tend to wear sunglasses instead…no one will know. Also, maybe he could look bug-eyed instead? Have him open his eyes real wide to see. My Mom & I did this when getting when getting our passports photos done…well it didn’t work out so well, cuz then we looked crazy!
