A couple of years ago we received The Gruffalo written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler in the mail from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. It became a fast favorite!  I personally enjoy hearing my husband read it as he has lots of fun voices for each of the characters. It is a charming story with the mouse outsmarting his predators with a fun twist! Lucian and Warren, now six and four, still consider this one of their top favorite books of all time and we still read it often to them. When the movie The Gruffalo came out we loved seeing the characters come to life on screen in this slower paced but super fun short film.

Now we are able to continue the story both in print and on screen with the book, The Gruffalo’s Childand the newly released movie which is narrated by an all star cast! Both my boys were so excited to receive a copy of each.

In Gruffalo: The Gruffalo’s Child, the Gruffalo tells his child an extraordinary story of “The Big Bad Mouse,” warning her never to go in the woods alone because there is a terrible creature lurking there.  Waiting until her father falls asleep, the Gruffalo’s Child sneaks out into the deep dark woods to see The Big Bad Mouse for herself.  Along the way she runs into a snake, an owl, and a fox and discovers that while they have similar features to The Big Bad Mouse, they are, in fact, not him.  Just as she is about to give up her search, she stumbles upon a tiny mouse. Cautious of her, the mouse listens to what the Gruffalo’s Child is looking for, and then decides to reveal his big bad secret!

Since my kids couldn’t wait to find out the story, we decided to watch the movie right after dinner. Some sequels can disappoint but this one certainly did not. My boys loved watching it from beginning to end and asked to watch again after it was done.  Instead we read the book before bed time and once again they enjoyed these familiar case of characters with the addition of the young Gruffalo.

The next day I caught Lucian reading The Gruffalo’s Child to himself in our living room chair. The book has the same familiar feel of the first book but with a different twist.

The book and DVD set would make a fabulous birthday or Christmas gift and together are very affordable. The DVD has a run time of 40 minutes and features a special behind-the-scenes look at the movie!

  2. I haven’t seen the movie but my grandsons have and they love it. I love the art in the book.

  3. This book has been a popular book at our preschool program. During the week the Gruffalo’s picture is blacked out of the story and they have to use their imagination to guess what he looks like. On the last day of the week we go on a Gruffalo hunt to find the parts of his body that are listed in the story-then they construct the Gruffalo and we then read the book with the gruffalo showing. The children have such a fun suspenceful week and so do the teachers!!!!
