I’ll admit it. I hate washing the dishes. I think filling it up is actually fun because I can quickly see a messy kitchen turn into a clean one in just a matter a minutes. Â But I mostly hate unloading the dishwasher and rinsing them off them before loading . I’ve heard that some people actually enjoy doing the dishes, and I really wish I was born with that special gene. You know the one that makes cleaning enjoyable? Instead I just look for the best products on the market to make my job as quick and painless as possible.
I’ve recently learned that I’ve been washing my dishes all wrong and was asked to share some information with you. With one simple tip, I can save a ton of time with my daily routine. Maybe you were doing this already, but I’m so guilty…
Stop Pre-washing Your Dishes!
Seems so simple right?
I know what you are going to say. You are probably like me and have justified it one of a few ways.
Excuses for Pre-washing Dishes
- Your dishes won’t get as clean and food particles will fly and stick to dishes.
- You don’t know where all that stuck on food will go.
- This is the way you’ve always done it. (Change feels strange.)
- Your dishwasher will start to smell.
If you’ve used any one of these excuses to justify the pre-washing or rinsing of dishes, you are not alone. I’ve said each and every one of them to myself. But stop it, seriously.
A new survey from Cascade Platinum and Marie Claire reveals that nearly all people are doing their dishes incorrectly with 96-percent wasting up to an hour pre-washing their dishes each week – when they should not. In order to get the most optimum clean and shine, it’s important to skip the prewash and use Cascade Platinum. This is because the special enzymes in Cascade Platinum latch onto the leftover food particles, breaking them down so they can wash away – even 24-hour stuck on food. With no food particles on the dishes, the enzymes can’t do their job as well and this can lead to dish issues.  And, of all the people wasting their time pre-washing, three-quarters (74%) are experiencing daily fails with dishes that come out looking dirty, spotted or streaked after running them in the dishwasher, with nearly half of respondents (51%) re-washing their dirty dishes a second time.
Did you read that? You don’t need to pre-wash as long as you are using a strong dishwashing detergent like . Your dishes will get as clean and food particles shouldn’t get stuck to anything else.
Did you know that most dishwashers feature a garbage disposal? I know mine does, but I never use it. If you didn’t, you aren’t alone. This same study found that 89% of those surveyed didn’t realize their dishwasher can safely dispose of any remaining food on dishes. (Assuming your dishwasher has a garbage disposal.)Â I remember thinking that feature was important when we bought our dishwasher new 8 years ago. And yet, I’ve never used it. Go figure.
KEY SURVEY FINDINGS
- Nearly half (46%) of survey respondents believe that skipping the pre-wash will lead to dirtier dishes. When in reality, breaking this habit – and skipping pre-wash – along with using Cascade Platinum, will help them achieve the ultimate clean and sparkle every time.
- Almost half (42%) of respondents have actually gone so far as to re-load the dishwasher after their family goes to bed because they did not think their family member(s) did it right the first time.
- More than half (56%) of respondents load their dishwashers after each meal.
If you are running your dishwasher every day, it shouldn’t smell. My husband hates smelling anything if he opens the dishwasher, which is one of the reasons I pre-wash. But even when I’m just about to run the dishwasher, I still rinse my dishes. Why? Habits are tough to break.

No I don’t pre-wash or pre-rinse my dishes.
I do pre-wash, and not sure a I can stop, even if I don’t need to pre-wash.
Nope I don’t pre-wash. I just shove them in the dishwasher lol.
We do a quick rinse on some plates as our dishwasher does not have the so called food “chopper” unit. but for just standard dinnerware, no. I am more worried these days about the sanitation part of the wash then getting every tiny piece of food particle off. And having a product that rinses off well. Hate the thought of chemicals still being on our dishes.
I have always pre rinsed.
I pre-rinse my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, I’ll probably won’t change because it is part of my routine.
I always pre wash….. ugh!
I don’t pre-wash my dishes. Only the worst of my dishes get a pre-wash.
I try to rinse off some stuff, but not all. My Fiance likes to pre-wash everything which drives me nuts
I always
I pre-wash the dishes as I only run the dishwasher 1-2 times per week. In addition, the dishwasher is really old and does not clean well at all and sometimes does not drain.
I usually just soak my dishes. But this post did open my eyes to some statistics when it comes to dish washing.
I do pre-wash some dishes. It doesn’t change my mind one way or the other.
I always pre wash/rinse my dishes.
I pre-rinse our dishes. No the post doesn’t change my mind, I don’t want extra food in the dishwasher.
i always pre wash and rinse. I would love to try this out and NOT do it for a change.
This reaffirms what I already know. I only rinse if there is a lot of stuff like a huge blob of honey, on the plate. We try to just scrap the stuff off and then load.
We pre-rinse in this house.
the only “prewash” around this hillbilly house is the dogs—then we wash, rinse, and dry in the hottest possible conditions to sanitze the dishes to death!
