When it comes to making better food choices, I admit I follow my taste buds. It is hard to swap out unhealthy ingredients for smarter ones when cooking if it doesn’t taste good. In the last few months my husband and I have fallen in love with avocado. It happened slowly, but now we always have some avocados on hand and guacamole in the fridge. It is a great way to add flavor to our food and a wonderful swap for everything from sour cream on our fajitas to cheese on our omelets. So when I came across the ingenious idea of swapping out mayo for avocado on the SweetSwaps.com, I couldn’t wait to test it out.
The Splenda Sweet Swaps Tumblr page is a great resource for making healthier choices and plenty of sweet swaps. My husband already uses SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener fairly regularly with his mixed drinks for a less added sugar option. I like to purchase the packets for quick and easy measuring and for portability.
Did you know that the average American consumes more than 22 teaspoons of added sugar a day? That’s more than TRIPLE the recommended amount for women and more than DOUBLE the recommended amount for men! Even more shocking when you realize how many calories come with all of that added sugar. Through the SWEET SWAPS™ IniGaGve, the SPLENDA® Brand is dishing out creaGve ways to swap full sugar for SPLENDA® Sweetener Products in order to save calories.
Fun Fact: By swapping one cup of sugar with one cup of SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated, you can save more than 600 calories!
I decided to test the avocado and sugar swap out myself last week by coming up with this tasty Broccoli Avocado Slaw. It is a perfect side option for the warmer months for cookouts and picnics. My husband seriously couldn’t get enough of it!
- 1 bag(12 oz) broccoli slaw mix
- ⅓ cup mashed ripe avocado
- 3 packets (1/8 cup) SPLENDA NO CALORIE SWEETENER
- 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon djion mustard
- ½ teaspoon celery seed
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons milk
- salt and pepper to taste
- Whisk all ingredients together except for broccoli slaw.
- Pour over slaw mix and toss until combined.
- Refrigerate until ready to serve.
I garnished mine with some leftover avocado and parsley. For more recipe ideas using SPLENDA, be sure to check out their recipes!
Did you know that besides mayo, you can also swap out butter, shortening, and oil in equal amounts for avocado? (So 1/2 cup of butter is swapped out with 1/2 cup of avodcado)
You can even replace eggs in recipes with approximately 1/8 cup to 1/4 cup mashed avocado.
By using avocado you are replacing saturated fats with “good fats” and adding about 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Pretty cool, right?
Do you have any great avocado swaps or SPLENDA swaps?
