Chocolate Chip Scones Recipe from KitchenAid {Spring Brunch Series}

No weekend is complete without something special to eat in the morning so I’ll be sharing with you some amazing brunch options during our Spring into Spring event.

One of my very favorite wake me up treats is a fresh batch of scones! Nothing quite compliments a cup of fresh coffee like a scone and I’m a sucker for them every time. I’ve been making scones for several years but have never tried baking a chocolate chip scone. It is  like the perfect mixture of “feels like a dessert” and “acceptable foods for breakfast”. So I was sold when I saw a recipe for them in the KitchenAid Recipe Collectioncookbook, which incidentally has an entire section dedicated to biscuits and scones! My kind of cook book as anyone who knows me will tell you I’m a carbaholic.

Don’t they look yummy? I assure you, they were. My husband ate way more than his fair share and so next time I make them I’ll have to hide some, just for me!

Chocolate Chip Scones Recipe

Servings 24
Author KitchenAid

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup golden raisins these tasted amazing paired with chocolate!
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup 1 stick butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees then line two cookie sheets with parchment paper (my preferred method) or lightly grease.
  2. Mix together flour, chocolate chips, raisins, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon in a large bowl until well blended.
  3. Add cubed butter and cut in with a pastry blender or two forks until you achieve coarse crumbs.
  4. Beat buttermilk, 1 of the eggs and vanilla in a small bowl and add to the flour mixture. Mix only until you get a sticky dough. (Do not over mix.)
  5. Drop two tablespoons worth of dough onto parchment lined or lightly greased cookie sheets. Mix remaining egg and milk in small bowl and brush that mixture over tops of scones with a pastry brush.
  6. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until toothpick after inserted in center comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack and cool 5 minutes before serving. Best served warm!

Best served warm! Try serving with regular butter, honey butter or your favorite jam!

My entire family loved these scones. If you were too afraid to attempt them before I hope this recipe convinces you to try them. Many scone recipes are extremely easy and the texture and flavors are a wonderful morning treat!

Watch for more ideas to come in the Brunch Series for Spring into Spring!

    1. Hmm…I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of a scone that was deep fried. Perhaps you are thinking of something else? (Sounds delicious though!)

Usually a scone tastes a lot like a biscuit or a dense cake, depending upon the recipe.

You should totally try these. They are super easy!

        1. Yep, looks like it is a local thing. I think this paragraph summed that up nicely! 🙂
“To a lot of Utahns, “scones” aren’t the biscuit-like, fruit-studded creations served with English tea but instead fried pieces of bread dough served with jam or honey butter. Scones are inexpensive, delicious and easy, especially when made with frozen roll dough.”

They look so good. I would totally have call that fried bread. That is giving me a mad craving….

          1. Maybe you should give in to that craving. But seriously, this has given me a new outlook on scones and I’ll have to try your delicious recipe. 🙂

  3. Scones have always seemed like something that would be really hard to bake (I am definitely more of a cooker thank a baker :)), but these look easy enough and so delicious! Thanks for the recipe, I will definitely give it a shot!

  4. Can’t wait to try this one!!! Think I’ll make it to take on our fishing trip!!! mmmmmmm

  9. You always make cooking look so fancy and neat and clean. Lol. I am a huge mess and my food is always ugly. It tastes good but it’s ugly. Lol. I have never had a scone. Not sure why but I really want to try this. I am a huge bread lover. I will eat any kind of bread in any shape or form. Lol.
