Cracker toffee is an easy but downright sinful homemade candy with crackers, brown sugar, butter and chocolate. Break it up and add it a dessert tray or give it as a thoughtful food gift! Makes a great addition for any holiday baking including Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter or make it just because. Anytime is a good time for this easy treat also known as Christmas Crack. These step-by-step instructions will walk you through how to make this cracker candy using basic ingredients.
Christmas Crack Candy can be made with a wide variety of cracker options! This one uses Club crackers for a delicious buttery flavor but saltines or Ritz can easily be substituted. This recipe was topped with pretzel pieces for some additional salt but is optional. My kids really go nuts for this cracker toffee recipe and other homemade candies like these pecan caramel clusters and this Nut Goodie Fudge. Of course we love classic cookies as well like monster cookies or jam thumbprint cookies for the holidays and this candy is a nice addition to cookie trays.
Cracker Toffee Ingredients
To make cracker toffee, you’ll need the follow ingredients:
- Club crackers (or Saltines or Ritz)
- butter
- brown sugar
- vanilla (optional)
- milk chocolate chips (or semi sweet chocolate chips)
- pretzels (optional) or other favorite toppings such as chopped nuts, candies, sprinkles, coconut, sea salt, dried fruit
There are a lot of ways to customize your crack toffee to suit your tastes or to customize for particular holidays or celebrations. I chose to add pretzels to the top because it adds a bit of of saltiness and I had them on hand. I prefer to use a square or rectangular shape cracker like Club crackers or Saltines because they fit nicely in the pan. But Ritz can easily be substituted as well.
How to Make Christmas Crack
To make Christmas Crack toffee, you’ll want to start by lining a baking sheet (15″ x 10″) with aluminum foil and spraying with cooking spray to avoid sticking. Place crackers in an even layer. I was able to get a row of seven crackers by six crackers for a perfect fit. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
In a medium saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat stirring often. Bring to a boil and boil for approximately three minutes, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and stir in vanilla if desired. Pour toffee mixture over top of crackers and spread evenly with a spatula. Bake uncovered for 5 minutes.
Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over top of hot toffee. Wait a few minutes to soften chocolate chips enough to spread. (Place in warm oven for 1 to 2 minutes to melt chocolate chips if needed). Gently spread chocolate out over toffee using a spatula.
Immediately top with any toppings such as pretzel pieces, small candies, dried fruit, sprinkles, coconut or nuts.
Cool to room temperature before transferring to the refrigerator. Refrigerate at least 2 hours or until very firm. Break into larger pieces. Store cracker toffee in an airtight container for up to two weeks either in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
If you decide to store in the refrigerator, I recommend removing from refrigerator 10 minutes before serving to allow your toffee to soften up a bit. My family prefers it closer to room temperature but this is a soft toffee and not hard regardless.
