My son found Shark vs. Train by Chris Barton during a book fair at his school and suckered me into buying it for him. Normally I try to avoid those as much as possible simply because we have so many books. (I frankly have had a bit of addiction for buying books. I’m working on that.) I am so glad he did! It is certainly a favorite and I personally love reading it myself!
This book is a bestseller for a reason. It takes the ingenious approach of two little boys playing (perfect since I have two myself) who each pick a different toy from the toy box. One chooses a shark and one chooses a train. We are then thrown into a make believe world where they are in a head to head battle for which is the best. The results are truly hilarious and have a deeper message hidden within. That we all have strengths and weaknesses. While you might struggle with some things, you can excel at others. And even the shark and train might be very different, they still have similarities, as is the same with people.

One of our favorite parts from the book has the two working lemonade stands. The train is in a desert and of course has a ton of people lining up for his cars full of lemonade. The shark on the other hand is underwater with a diver holding a glass of lemonade. The shark is exclaiming, “What do you MEAN it is a little watery?” *giggle* Another scene has the shark and train going trick-or-treating. I bet you can guess who manages to scare someone into giving them all their candy?

Shark vs. Train  is really a must have for any child. This book will have you laughing right along with your child and is far from a boring read. You won’t even mind if you have to read it over and over! (Well not too much anyway…)
