Last month I shared with you details about Scholastic’s summer reading program and their Summer Reading Challenge theme which is “Reading Under the Stars” (powered by EVEREADY®). Throughout the summer, kids have been reading around the galaxy and unlocking star constellations as they log reading minutes, encouraging summer reading. Scholastic and EVEREADY sent me a fun package filled books, flashlights and a outdoor blanket to inspire us to read under the stars. Getting my kids excited about reading is easy for me, but the my kids were over the moon about our special party last week. We started our evening off with some backyard s’mores. It seemed fitting, and we hadn’t yet enjoyed any yet this summer so the kids were thrilled. I don’t think Wesley had ever tried a s’more yet, so you can imagine what he thought of this tasty treat. His face was a sticky mess afterwards, but it was entirely worth it. Of course, Lucian and Warren have had plenty of s’mores, a favorite summer snack. Warren even got his first chance at roasting his own marshmallows on a stick. (He was under direct supervision of course.) While actually reading directly under the stars on a blanket in theory sounded fun, I knew the potential for a lot of mosquitoes could ruin our evening. So we picked up a four person tent and set it up in our backyard. The boys could still see the sky, but we were protected from pesky bugs. It worked out great! The boys loved the tent, and now we have plans for a backyard camp out. (We couldn’t that night as there was rain in the overnight forecast.) The flashlights were a huge hit, especially with our two year old. The headlamp was a fast favorite. Since we only had one in that style, they had to take turns. Wesley figured out easily how to turn it off and on. That alone kept him busy for a while. The two older boys really liked their new books, and Wesley loved listening to stories in the tent. It reminded me that sometimes just breaking from routine a bit can be so much fun. While reading is always part of our nighttime ritual, taking our reading outdoors really made it special. I encourage you to check out the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge program if you haven’t yet already and consider your own Reading Under the Stars party. It would be a great way to celebrate these last days of summer! Stay connected Scholastic via social media:

My kids would love this idea, but sadly we don’t own a tent. Maybe reading around the campfire? We are doing a summer reading challenge with our oldest. Her goal is to read 100 books and she has less than 30 to go!
We didn’t own a tent either. I picked this one up for $45 regular price at Target. 🙂 But I think sitting around a campfire would be just as much fun!
That’s so great the kids love to read and combining reading with the outdoors is a fun twist on things, we had a neighborhood sm’ore party and it was a messy blast!
We did this with the kids, they were a bit distracted the first time, but I think next time will go better. It is a way to make summer reading fun. I love scholastic, it is often the best place to buy books. And it helps my kid’s school earn books for their school.
