As parents, we know that planning a birthday party can be a lot of work. But with a little bit of creativity, it can be a lot of fun too! If you’re looking for an easy and enjoyable party theme, why not try a shark party?
Want a ocean themed birthday but can’t choose between sharks or mermaid? Are you celebrating two birthdays and one child wants sharks and the other wants mermaids? No need to choose. Throw a shark and mermaid party your kids will never forget! These blue jello cups are perfect for a fun and whimsical birthday bash. This jello recipe was used to make mermaid jello so use the same base to make themed treats for both.
Shark Jello Cups Ingredients
Just a few ingredients are needed to make this shark jello. To make them as shown you’ll need:
- blue gelatin
- whipped topping
- sprinkles in white, light blue, gray, silver and/or aqua
- shark fin cupcake picks
- clear plastic cups or small clear glass dishes (6 to 9 oz are ideal)
I purchased the shark fin cupcake toppers on Amazon in a large pack of 72 shark fins. They are perfect for this project! You can find them in smaller quantities as well, including a 24 count of shark fins and also a set that includes a shark cake topper as well. These shark fins are made of plastic and hold up well over time. I highly recommend washing them and using them again, if not for a birthday then for your Shark Week food or summer cookouts!
For the shark sprinkles, I used a mixture of light blue, silver and white jimmies, sixlets, nonpariels and confetti sprinkles, using what I already had on hand. This nonpariel mix would also be a great choice.
How to Make Shark Jello
Let’s get to making these shark jello cups, shall we? You’ll want to mix together your blue gelatin and boiling water in a large bowl. Whisk for two minutes so the gelatin is completely dissolved.
Fold in your whipped topping and stir until fully melted and combined. This is a full 16 oz. container of COOL WHIP but of course you could substitute two of the smaller 8 oz size.
Your jello mousse will foam up and turn into this lighter aqua color.
Pour into small glass dishes or plastic cups. I filled my 9 oz SOLO cups up 2/3 of the way full and got 8 desserts.
I find it easiest to place on a small baking tray and covering with plastic wrap before transferring to the refrigerator to firm up. Allow up to 8 hours to get fully firm.
How to Make Shark Jello Cups
Once your jello is firm, you can assemble your shark jello cups. You’ll want to start by spooning additional whipped topping or whipped cream if preferred over the top. I used the back of a spoon to create a the look of white waves. By using COOL WHIP, the waves stayed fairly stable.
Insert a shark fin into each jello cup.
Top with sprinkles. Buy your favorite shark sprinkle mix or make your own like I did!
Your guests will love diving into these jello cups!
