A Tequila Sunrise is one my favorite alcoholic drinks. It is really no wonder it became a favorite of Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones who helped make it popular in the 70’s. I love the simple flavors and overall look, however I don’t always need or want alcohol. This mocktail recipe uses common bar ingredients so it is easy to make using items already on hand.

Tequila Sunrise got its name from the way the drink looks when served, with the orange juice and grenadine layered to resemble a sunrise. Because it is such a simple concept, it is very easy to replicate as a gorgeous mocktail drink. Whether you need an easy mocktail for pregnancy or just want to provide party guests with a non-alcoholic option, this recipe is ideal!

This virgin Tequila Sunrise is a delicious and refreshing non-alcoholic beverage that is perfect for any occasion! Made with orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine syrup, and maraschino cherries, this fruity cocktail is sure to be a hit with everyone.

What is a Mocktail?

Mocktails, or non-alcoholic cocktails, are concocted with the same components as their alcoholic counterparts, but without the addition of alcohol. They are made using fruit juices, syrups, and other flavorings, and make a great alternative for those who prefer to avoid alcohol but still want to enjoy a fun and tasty beverage. These non-alcoholic drinks can be super simple like a cranberry juice mocktail and apple cider mocktail or feature more complex flavor profiles like this spicy jalapeno margarita mocktail.

Need a mocktail for pregnancy? Want a fun fruity non-alcoholic drink? Everyone will love this delicious tequila sunrise mocktail!

Tequila Sunrise Mocktail Ingredients

Only a few simple ingredients are required to make this sweet sunrise mocktail drink recipe:

  • orange juice
  • pineapple juice
  • grenadine (or maraschino cherry juice)
  • maraschino cherries for garnish
  • orange slices for garnish (or orange wedges, if preferred)

While pineapple juice isn’t typically found in the original tequila sunrise, it works perfectly for layering the beautiful colors found in this drink. If you want to take this drink up another level, use fresh orange juice, just squeezed.

Homemade Grenadine

Don’t have grenadine? You can make homemade grenadine syrup much like you would simple syrup. Combine equal parts pomegranate juice and sugar and a splash of lemon or lime juice if desired. Simmer until sugar is fully dissolved.

Grenadine Substitute

You can skip the grenadine altogether like I did and use the maraschino syrup in the jar of cherries instead. No, maraschino syrup is not the same as grenadine. Maraschino syrup is made from marasca cherries, while grenadine is made from pomegranate juice. But the result in this drink and the overall taste is very similar.

How to Make a Sunrise Mocktail

Typically a tequila sunrise is served in a highball glass which is a tall skinny glass which holds 8 to 12 ounces. But I opted for these pretty 8 oz low ball glasses because I love the gold trim! You can make this recipe in just a few simple steps. Start by adding some ice to your glass and pouring in your orange juice and pineapple juice.

Maraschino cherry juice used in place of grenadine

Add in a splash of grenadine or maraschino cherry juice if using that substitute. Next, add in a couple of cherries to the center of the drink. They not only make a beautiful garnish but also taste delicious after soaking in the orange and pineapple juice.

Garnish the side of the glass with a half of an orange slice to mimic the setting sun in this virgin sunrise mocktail.

The grenadine in a tequila sunrise sinks because it is denser than the other liquids in the drink. The grenadine is heavier than the orange juice and tequila, so it sinks to the bottom of the glass. Avoid stirring before serving so you don’t ruin the beautiful color.
