I first chose this silicone mermaid mold set on Amazon. You can buy them together or individually, although if you are on the fence, it is only a little bit more to get both of them. I wanted options.

This gummy mermaid tail mold makes tails that are very detailed yet much smaller than the other molds. Great if your project requires a smaller tail. However, this also makes them more fragile and susceptible to breaking. You’ll want to be sure you gently lift each tail out individually when the chocolate is set. Do not turn the mold over and release like the plastic mold. (I lost several tails this way.) Make sure your chocolate is fully set but not too cold which can make your tails brittle and more likely to break. I recommend placing them in the refrigerator for 15 minutes or so and then gently removing them. It helps to carefully peel all the sides away from the mold on each individual tail before removing.

I had this post mostly written and then I just happened to notice another cool silicone mermaid mold set from the same maker as the large and small tail featured above. They looked so pretty that I had to buy them and try them out.

I found the pros and cons to be very similar to the large and small tail at the beginning of this post. I did find it a bit more difficult to remove air bubbles but I don’t think it takes away from the beautiful details in this set.

Aren’t the details super pretty? As you can see, even with several taps I had a few holes but I think they work with this particular mold and make them look a bit more like bubbles. The large tail would be great for a cake.
Here is a breakdown on sizes of the tails in comparison to a quarter.
And here is a comparison of the two largest tails.
I will be sure to update this post with any additional mermaid tail molds I purchase and try to get a comparison with the tails on cupcakes for a better visual.
All of these mermaid tails have silver pearl dust applied and were made from Wilton candy melts.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful information. I think they all look great. I think I would choose the clear tray to use out of all these options.
my granddaughter has requested in mermaid cake for her birthday. I was on the fence about what kind of mold to get, and your article contained two of the options I was debating. very helpful article, going with the two pack. Thanks again!
So glad that I could be of help! This is the exact reason I decided to write this post because it is so hard to judge which mold is best for what project. Thank you for letting me know and I’m sure your granddaughter will love her mermaid cake!
I have spent two days trying to make the one Mujiang mermaid tail silicone with white chocolate. I need 30 tails for cupcakes for my granddaughter’s birthday celebration at school, and after two days I have 12 that made it through the de-molding. I am so careful in removing them from the mold after placing them in the freezer to harden. I think I get one clean removal for every 12 made. How do you remove them without the thin part breaking?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Jeanie
I am so sorry that you are having trouble and that I didn’t see this comment sooner. I don’t lose many when removing from the mold as long as I am careful but I don’t harden them in the freezer. It might be because you are making the chocolate too brittle by putting them in the freezer. Try placing them in the fridge for about 15 to 20 minutes. You also want to make sure that you aren’t adding a ton of chocolate into the molds so they overflow and attach to the back of the mold, if that makes any sense. Make sure you scrap off the excess before hardening.
